It gets out of hand when a personal remark is fanned into harsh insults. "Telling it how it is" is an immature excuse because most debates don't have a right or wrong, and there is no reason for anyone to mudsling here. A good debate here can leave a person well educated on the topic when he/she encounters it in his/her real life.

It could also go wrong if something is said that isn't meant to be insulting, but is taken in the wrong way by other members.

That's usually cleared quickly with a brief apology; I don't think I've seen many problems here because of that.
