I'll give you guys a few pointers if you don't know much about Oblivion :) to help with your gaming experience. Of course, if you want to play it absolutely spoiler-free (though nothing I'm going to say is any more than a pretty minor spoiler) go ahead and skip my post.

There are guilds in Oblivion and two of them are extremely popular and the favorites of perhaps any series of quests in any game, period, for many gamers. These would be the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' guild. I highly recommend them to anyone that plays. You can be in both at the same time, hell, you can be in all of the guilds at the same time. The Dark Brotherhood is an assassination guild, and to enter you need to kill a human being which is usually illegal. There are ways around this to avoid the hassle of "STOP, CRIMINAL SCUM", but you can have fun trying things out :) The Thieves' guild offers fences who are basically merchants who will buy stolen goods. Regular responsible merchants will not even give you the option of selling them stolen goods, which is unfortunate because stealing things is one of the best ways of making money in Oblivion.

Secondly, and this is pretty important because it's Oblivion's weakest point by FAR. I have to warn you, the leveling system is absurdly broken. If you screw up, it's a real possibility that you may end up growing weaker and weaker as you level due to how Oblivion's leveling system works - everything levels up with you. Don't be afraid of using the difficulty level slider, it's the game's fault, not yours or any lack of skill on your part. If you care about preventing this or learning more about this hideous flaw you can google Oblivion's leveling system for more info, or alternatively you could get mods to fix this issue (but will fundamentally change the game).

There's also no obligation at all to do the main quest, and many people don't (see PandaSong). There are toons of side quests, hundreds, and an amazing game world. Talk to people, go adventuring, everything is pretty satisfying.

Srsly, mages can't delete from their spellbook. It's annoying. Plus, I feel very satisfied every time I score a sneak attack critical.
(Mix in alchemy and poison your arrows for profit.)

Ah, oblivion, I probably have over 400 hours played among all my characters, been playing it every year since the game released.
The leveling system is annoying, I like the system itself, but the way they made it so the stats you get depend on how much you trained X skill, makes it too hardcore if you want to have the best character possible. I HIGHLY recommend you get a mod for that, AF Leveling Mod is the one I used mostly, or you can try Oblivion XP if you like the usual experience system of RPGs.

Also, GET(!!!!!!) Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, PLAYING A GAME WITHOUT THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO PLAY IT D:!, the leveled list in Oblivion SUCKS MAJOR ASS.
And Martigen's Monster Mod, and the Unnoficial Oblivion Patch... hmm what else. Deadly Reflex makes combat more dynamic, timing dodges on spells, shield bash, and beheading is all fun.
Oh and the magic overhauls, Supreme Magicka. And Midas Magic for extra awesomesauce spells and interesting places and quests.
