View Full Version : Who else is tired of this stupid huge sunglasses fad?
Here, so we're clear what I'm talking about:

So who else is tired of this huge sunglasses fad? I'm sorry, but it needs to be said... If you wear these, you look ridiculous. Covering up half your face is not attractive.
I mean honestly, the trend that was started by grandmothers with bad eyesight somehow spread to the rest of society? Really?
I honestly look at these and think it looks like someone thought it'd be hilarious to wear in public, or someone lost some horrible bet, or maybe has a really bad black eye... but no, I see celebrities wandering around in paparazzi shots wearing them. So, maybe they're the ones to blame for this ridiculous trend. But hell, just about everyone in their 20's and 30's wears the stupid looking crap now.
I know people look up to celebrities and everything they do people want to think is cool, but I mean really... they look ridiculous. Do people really just blindly follow every stupid new fad that comes out without even stopping to judge it for themselves?
If a girl decided to wear welder goggles on a date a couple years ago she would have been a laughing stock, and now... it's "normal." Wtf happened? Covering up half your face is not attractive.
I swear, every time I see one of my friends wearing them I want to just take them off and stomp them on the ground and give them a really stern look. Unfortunately I haven't snapped into becoming that crazy just yet... But I'm getting pretty close!
So, what do you guys think? I added an unbiased poll.
edit: More dumb pictures!

I'm not inclined to punch people in the face, but I don't like the way they look.
I've always thought they look very silly.
Also, that girl wearing them in the last picture looks SO familiar, it's crazy.

They're so ugly.
they always bother me, but in the same way i'm bothered by girls who wear a lot of makeup. It's just a way to hide your true self and your emotions.
tho it does like kind of silly. but then again i think its for a similar reason why girls like oversized bags. makes them look smaller, so huge sunglasses would make their face look smaller. . . ?

People don't wear makeup to hide themselves. They wear makeup to try and emphasize their strong points and dilute the flaws.
I wear makeup simply because I think it makes me look better. It's not because I hate my face or I want to "hide my emotions".
People wear clothes because they think they look better in them. Why don't you walk around in a huge tattered trench coat as opposed to something new that actually fits you?
Just like brushing your hair or wearing nice clothes, it's just to try and improve on yourself.

well, that's called moderation. I meant a lot of makeup.

i've yet to meet a girl who puts on a new face who has self-confidence. unless they were getting paid to do so, of course.
clothing is great too, but then it becomes a similar issue when it turns into super short shorts, belly exposed shirt, that kind of thing. you'll hardly attract the right kind of guy that way.
of course, I turn a little giddy and try on products when i enter a sephora, but I never want to look like something i'm not. the right eyeliner is a girls best friend.

Then what's your definition of "a lot of makeup"?
Whatever you do, you can't run away from yourself using makeup, unless you're a Hollywood monster movie makeup artist.

I wear makeup and I wear big sunglasses
but as big as the ones in those photos, bigger
like the ones that are 3x bigger than your head for the lulz.
Big sunglasses don't bother me
sure I don't wear them
but it doesn't piss me off when I see other people wear them.

Covering up girl's eyes.
It makes them a hellova more attractive.
...
While they're wearing them.
just to clear any misunderstanding, im not saying all makeup is bad. It's bad when it stops looking natural, then i start seeing correlations.
it's a little subjective.
here's borderline too much (http://www.hollywoodcelebgossips.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/uncensored-sickles-high-school-yearbook-photo-girl-myspace-picture-468x351.jpg), (too heavy on the eyeliner)

Why all the hate for really big sunglasses? What's so wrong with wanting to be prepared if someone jumps out of nowhere and starts welding in front of you, trying to blind you? You gotta be prepared for **** like that.

Why do you even care? It's not you or your face so if other people feel good about it so should you.As I said before, I personally care because I can't identify anyone without seeing their eyes, which is a problem with sunglasses as a whole. Big sunglasses just fall under that umbrella, so I'm bothered by them.
If not for that, I would be perfectly fine with letting people do as they please. The fad just makes my life harder.

its hard to feel good for other people about fads, when its shallow and i'm forced to have to see every guy's underwear since wearing them half off is cool.

Fair enough. But that doesn't mean you're against the fad, you wouldn't care if that didn't affect your ability to identify people. So you're cool.

How do you know it's a fad? That's your own perception. You believe it's shallow but that doesn't make it shallow to everyone else, because your perception of reality is flawed per se. Therefore, you're not forced to have to see every guy's underwear because you shouldn't care if they think it looks cool, it should come as neutral perception. In other words, what people do is not the problem but the way you think.

it's a fad when it leaves as quick as it comes. There is no doubt that it is one (http://www.svsu.edu/clubs/vanguard/stories/867). I was kind of joking about the underwear thing though, but do generally view fads as shallow and superficial. rather then getting your own identity, you use whats popular to be accepted and not go against the status quo. this is my problem with pop culture.
this is my opinion. I'm not going around pulling people's oversized glasses off their faces or laughing at them around their back, but merely observe from a distance and notice the correlations, which are hard to ignore.

Oh right. Then I see your point. I read you're studying psychology, wouldn't you think part of someone's identity comes from collectiveness? I mean, pop culture is a huge part of a nation's history. People thought facebook was a fad, look at it now, I don't think it will be easily forgotten.

yes, fads can develop into icons which become integrated into the identity of an area or culture, but its very unlikely. like coca cola. facebook certainly was a surprise to me, I figured it would fade out like myspace.
the collectiveness is very broad and i liken it to culture. people can use it in any way shape or form, be it identifying very strictly with their background, or religion, even gender; I believe strongly going in any direction makes people less of who they are and more about who they make themselves, be it the music the listen to, what they drink, wear, watch, etc. I find that causes people to become more shallow and superficial; i've seen way too many depressed people about minor things, however they make it mean a lot to them for whatever reason, and it leads to disorders like anorexia. I have way too many female friends who don't eat. but i digress..
tl;dr, moderation is my favourite thing in the world.

^I don't know what kind of people you hang around, but the people around here don't follow trends like a holy book.
People that I'm familiar with, at least, follow trends because they think it's cool. They honestly like whatever it may be, and they don't do it because it's just "in fashion".
Life is completely about what you make yourself, and if you like what you see on TV and in magazines, then you make yourself into what you want to be.
Well, the main identifier for people for me is that region, so I have trouble identifying with people who wear such big glasses.
Something like this, I can identify with:
http://c0000946.cdn1.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/macys-com-35-4247415_ray-ban-top-bar-polarized-small-square-sunglasses_orignal.jpghttp://i51.tinypic.com/29gjuxy.jpg
Because you can see the entire nose, the eyebrows and cheeks. They still look like them. When they're like that they flow naturally anyways because the eye sockets themselves are that big. Any bigger than that though and it starts to look stupid and makes it hard to associate them as a real person.

It's even more common if you deal with teenage girls at school.
But they aren't so bad. Just moderate.
It's not like they're so shallow they'll cry at every little thing. Imo, there aren't many super "shallow" people. Most people have brains and can think for themselves deeper than just waking up and living for getting the shorts they want or something like that. And plus, superficial and shallow are derogatory terms now.

the hell? you better be joking.
anyways, you don't need to be completely neurotic to qualify as one, you're thinking a little too extreme.
and yes, moderation is indeed the best thing in the world.
I think Kaz knows better people because she's Canadian. >> I personally agree with Mama. Most girls I know are pretty superficial and just talk about things. Like where they went shopping, what they got from who, who's with/doing who, who's pregnant with who, pretty much just gossip and never really any stories about events that happen.
On another note, I've tried on those super huge sunglasses before, and I think they're actually very uncomfortable. Whenever you smile your cheeks make them rise and it's weird. :/
