Looking at videos of it and reading about it, sounds just like the type of game for me. 100% freedom of what you want to do in a ridiculously vast game world (universe in this case).
Just looking for any opinions from people who tried it out.

I've read some reviews by people who quit the game. They said it's a good game in that it's very intricate, complex, and nice to look at. They said that the complexity is what drives them away from the game, as you end up staring at Excel spreadsheets and planning budgets rather than actually playing the game. The game was labelled a second desk job by a few people. However people generally praise the game and the company. Eve recently allowed players to donate their in game money (was converted into real money) to Japan.

I've heard that it takes way too much work to do any good in that game, like Intex kinda said D8
One of my best friends quit Mabi for EVE though, so it has to be fun once you get far into it.

I was told that it had a giant learning curve.

It was fun for the day I played it.

It was interesting at first, but I couldn't really figure out what to do.
It seems like a huge afk and number crunching game, though.

If you're the kind of person who wants to quit games when something goes wrong (i.e. save data goes poof) then I don't think you would like it. You can invest billions into a super pro ship then some a-hole comes in and nukes it. Then it's gone forever. That being said, if you like complexity and risk vs. reward situations, you'll really dig it.

wow, that is lame as ****, that image was originally done for Dwarf Fortress ._.

Anyway, EVE is a pretty good game, I like how the economy is completely run by players, huge world, and a hardcore PvP system.
It's really team based too, you won't get anywhere on your own, you need to get a guild asap, or you'll get shot down by pirates (players) all the ****ing time. People will always team up, even if it isn't a guild or friends, miners for example just hire other players for protection and whatever, there's tons of mercenaries around (again, players, you'll barely interact with NPCs later on).
If you enjoy other sandbox Space Simulators (there's tons of singleplayer games like this) You'll most likely enjoy EVE.

Theres very little actual ACTION.
Its mostly player economy driven. I think you might enjoy it osayidan, and even though the game has been out for forever, the developers are constantly putting in some really great updates.

I've been wanting to try it. The fact that the economy is player-ran and that your character grows even when you are logged out is pretty cool. At the same time, I don't tend to get "hardcore" with gaming, so it's probably not for me. :(

The player run economy and lots of afk-playing is pretty much what I like, it's how I used to play mabi. Would horde stuff and sell it when the time was right, but mabi is too limited for things like that.
Only thing I'm worried about is the same as Yoorah, I don't hardcore game, I play very casual and also I prefer to solo. So the guild thing and huge time requirements might ruin it.

Well, you can solo anything in the non-pvp areas. Buuuuut EVE is a pretty PVP intense game D: (People don't even dare to go into PvP areas alone, losing your ship is quite the sad and rage filled moment) I guess it's up to you really... there are soloers out there, but I think they lose quite some content.
Did you give the free trial a go? Should help decide.

Not yet, when I have time and my new PC is built I plan to try it out.
