A Flag For The United States Of Europe (http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2010/05/29/a-flag-for-the-united-states-of-europe/)

The only one that looks -nice- is 'Europe - United in Diversity', and it matches up quite well to Europe. However, turning that into a flag is simply a retarded idea. While people will remember it, there is just way to much going on (And I have absolutely no idea if those designs are suppose to symbolize something, or whether they're just there..?).

The other ones go from way to simple, to absolutely garish:

Europtimism: What was the guy thinking? It looks like some abstract digital art I did for my High School design class... Definitely not fitting for a flag concept.

Night Sky: Yellow dots on blue... Way to simple, and theres not really much symbolism. The flag is suppose to symbolize Europe, not dots on a blue background.

Color Prints: What is with these designers (And Europe), choosing modern abstract art for a flag? Deciding to modernize a flag is one thing, but narrowing down to decisions that include a colorized thumb print? Nonsense.

Eurospace: More dots on blue, and it really isn't interesting.

Symbol and Flag of Europe: WHAT IS WITH DOTS ON BLUE!

Join The Stars: At least its stars on blue this time, but whats the point in their placement? Looks like there was no thought given to the actual concept.

Spectrum: No, just on. Modern retro... I had a hippy ex girlfriend who had a chair that looked like this. Anytime I saw this flag, I'll remember this ugly ass chair.

Unity in the European Union: White dots on blue this time... And just like with Join The Stars, they're just thrown wherever. It is not in the least interesting.

United We Shine: I should sue this guy for copyright, because I did this exact same design... The first time I touched Photoshop and used the original radial gradient tool. Really, why the hell would this even be chosen.

I think their choices are extremely stupid... They could have chosen better ones like these ones:

The idea of this symbol is to give the existing European flag elements-stars and circle, a new shape, new dimension adjusted to the present, past and future of the European Union. Stars representing the EU members join the circle, union, forming the letter E-for Europe.

A lot of thought went into this design at least, and at least it looks more acceptable than the others.

The bonding together of members of an organization/unit in such a way as to sustain their will and commitment to each other, their unit, and the mission (William Henderson, 1985). The Symbol of the waves represents the Free-Flow of the EU - freedom, pride and understanding. The horizon rising with the stars shows the commitment and the liberty of the EU to the European Nations.

Again, MUCH great in terms of concept and design execution. Its simple, yet refined, and if you saw it, you'd most likely remember it for being for the EU.

Just as the UN flag is a worldwide unifying symbol so to can this flag unify Europe. It is not associated with a single country, ethnicity or political ideology. Geography and shared ancient heritage are the unifying factors. The countries that are included on the map are all EU members, candidate and potential candidate countries, and countries still considered highly European (Norway and Switzerland).

Again, this one is much better than the ones that were chosen, and its easy to remember. Its clean, and simple, yet you'll match it to the EU.

This design symbolise dynamism of europe. Reference to the old flag of blue color and using star symbol. A lot of star like movement and dynamism of countries...and so of Europe.

While it might use stars (Close enough to those damn dots), it at least has a concept thats percievable.

---

I went through 10 pages, and those are the ONLY ones that I saw that looked like they would be workable as a flag (Some of the things shown were purely digital art... You can't take ALL digital art and present it as print, as you lose dimension and detail).

Tell me what you guys think of the selection, the ones I posted, or whatever flag concepts you think would have been a better alternative.

The current one for the EU looks best, imo.

Oh wait, this is about some hope of a guy for "United States of Europe"? I withhold my opinion about that.

But yes, I agree that their choices were extremely stupid.

They're set on changing it, which is fine and all... But why would they choose the most idiotic trash for potential flags?

Only one looks decent, and it looks like a quilt an epileptic grandmother made while having a seizure.

Other than that, I don't think designs from people outside of Europe should even be allowed.

Sitepoint is far from a random blog... It is one of the largest development/web design related sites, as well as occasionally having pieces on traditional or print design. As the new EU flag will effect websites, and design itself, they wrote an article about it.

I agree people outside of the EU shouldn't have been allowed to present a design, however because a flag represents a nation (Or in this case a continent), they wanted to see what people around the world would do. You'll notice, I picked out ones that were done only by people in Europe, as the others either would be stupid (I saw a smiley face, and a blue banana...), or were just plain pointless.

Also, if it isn't clear, this isn't for an actual change of the flag, but just a design project to view the opinions of the world if the flag WERE to change.

If the world makes it to 2020 I bet all the flags are gonna be post modern, didn't France already do something kinda like this?

I don't pay attention to France =}.

But, I hope if they DO modernize, they at least keep the distinction of the existing flags. People automatically relate the current flag to that nation/entity, and changing it can be a stupid move if not done carefully.

With the entries that were submitted, I don't think these people realized that the flag wasn't meant to be a 'logo', but more a personification or symbol of the country. When you think of the United States, most often you think of the flag, and the symbols represented by the flag.

The colored ones seem too... un-professional. Like it's a small organization rather than a representation of grand, historic nations.

I really like the one with the uhhh... crap forgot the name, the greek weave thing.

They shouldve stayed as the European Union
we don't want another "United States"
Technically their nations in a union
not a bunch of states mashed together

also, no one really calls the United States the United States of America
they just say America

I don't like any of them. The ones on that link are plain horrible. Especially this one, is this some kind of a joke?

Some kid with the gradient tool on photoshop designed this.

As for the ones posted in this thread, the design quality is far better, but they don't look like flags. They look like logos for companies. Unless they want to imply that the EU is going to become a corporation, then they just don't work. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually happens...

They should just use Koolhaas' flag proposal:

So much win.
