We is getting ads

Decided to finally put them in the event that we ever do need to upgrade to a dedicated server.

It will be Google adsense only, probably one of the most respectable ad networks out there. They don't have annoying ads or popups, and I can block ads I don't want to have here.

There will be 2 ad locations, first one will be after the first post in each thread, that seems to be the most popular and successful location for forums.

Second will be near the top of the page, a single line of plain text link ads, located there:

Later on I'll also test out a donation method that lets you get rid of ads and gives other benefits, and I'll probably make it so upgraded accounts don't see the ad at the top.

I'll try to get the ads working today, if you ever notice inappropriate ads let me know so I can kick them out.

Well, the ones we have are going to be rather moderate compared to other Forums in general. And it's required to help keep the Nation up and running, so.. I think it's a fair deal.

Just finished adding the ones to the top of the page... the ads will probably be very weird until google collected enough data to show content relevant ads.

Also if you upgraded your account to level 1 or 2 you shouldn't be seeing that one.

Yeah, "after first post" are by far my most hated kind of ads. It completely detracts from the forum. On the sides would have been much preferable...

And ads that give money every time they load as opposed to ones that are clicked would have been a better choice I think.

The ones after the first post are the best performing for forums. some of the google ads give money per 1000 page loads and per click. Other networks that pay out quicker also have more annoying ads, like the ones with audio.

Each entity that wants to be advertised sets how much they will pay per click. Google then shows all of them randomly, but with a bias towards those who have offered more per click. I dunno how the 1000 pageviews thing works.

Anyway.. I don't think people should be expressing their dissatisfaction about these. It's only fair to aim for making Mabination self-sufficient in funding, at least.

How much do you do pay for the VPS, anyway? You said you have more than enough CPU/RAM, in which case it's safe to say that the disk issue was entirely on the host's end. You won't need to purchase more resources any time soon, unless the community here has an unexpected growth spurt of some sort.

Don't do this. In the best case scenario, Google will simply remove all of your cheated clicks. In the worst case, they will ban this site from having ads.

Right now it's 75$ per month. I don't know if that 11$ was people clicking it to try and show their support (which they shouldn't do) or genuine stuff. We'll see as the days go by what the performance is like.

If we move to a new server, the one I planned out with another datacenter I know would be just under 400$ first-time fee to pay for hardware upgrades followed by about 130 - 150$ per month.

Some ads also count every X number of views though.

You want Mabination, yet you don't want to even load some very non-intrusive ads to help support it, while all this time Osay has been paying for the entire site himself out of his own pocket. Selfish, just selfish...

Honestly, when it comes down to helping Osay (and the rest of the community therefore) out by loading a few ads that aren't all that bad, or Mabination ceasing to exist... it's obvious which choice is the preferred one.

Of course, in the end... a few selfish people blocking them aren't going to matter.

For the forum to have gone this long with just Osay supporting it is amazing. Honestly, if it were me, I wouldn't have paid for a website out of my own pocket just for the members' sake.

If you browse & enjoy the forums you might as well let the ads show up, it's the least anyone can do. Could at least show some gratitude for the 14+ months that nation has been ad-free.

For the people who complain: Those ads aren't even half as bad as what you find on pretty much EVERY single website. Hell even youtube without adblock is worse than the ads we have on Nation. I hardly noticed the one after the first post, and the one at top can be removed by upgrading your account, I really don't see the problem seriously. Like pretty much everyone said it's pretty selfish to expect the forum to be running ad-free when you're not the one paying for it. I really wanted to post a "Deal with it" picture but that would be considered trolling I believe.

P.S. I browse in Chrome. How to block ad's in Chrome and no I'm not using firefox just to browse Mabination. I shouldn't have to be forced to change browsers to have an enjoyable experience.

Removed the text ads on top for all logged in members. For guests, they get another one similar to those that show up after the first posts along with a message telling them to log in to get rid of it.

Should encourage more registrations while helping more with the success of the ads, text ads don't perform well.

There was also the fact that Itchy only cared about getting money from his wonderful malicious ads and ignored the community.

Seriously guys, I dunno why you are so appalled by this. This site wasn't created so we could avoid seeing ads, it was created for a poop ton of important reasons:
-To avoid dangerous ads
-To have an active web admin
-To have actual control over the site/rules
-To protect the community from destruction

You people are here because you like being here (I hope). Be aware that if we don't have ads there is a chance of you losing this place. Ads are the best way to guarantee that this site will survive any possible hardship. If you really hate these ads, you can always donate and they will disappear, simple as that. The staff likes being here and we like the community. We aren't just doing this for ourselves, we are doing it for you guys. As for the ad layout, stuff like that can always be changed. I'm fine where the ads are but if there is a big problem, I'm sure we can always place them somewhere else.

Well I don't mind the ads so much as long as I can donate to get rid of them. Only reason why I'm complaining is because there's ads and I don't have the option to donate yet cause the donation feature isn't setup yet >.>

EDIT: The ads aren't showing up for me now. I uninstalled and disabled my proxy. Reloaded firefox and there's no Ferghus or ads. Just blank white space. Going to try rebooting to see if they show up. I do hope the Donation feature is up sometime this week though.

EDIT 2: Fixed the problem by clearing my cache and cookies in Chrome. Now the ads show up. I still would like the Donation feature. I don't have to click them for Osay to make money do I?
