This class has been known about for quite some time already, but the developers only recently put out some videos showing her in action. For those who don't know, she is a mechanic-type character who specializes in alchemy and robotics. As you can see from the videos, her main weapon is a cannon, and she can use traps and summon machines to aid her in battle.
According to the developers, the Academic comes from the future and uses her own special communications device to receive quests. Her weapon was designed with the intent of bringing something new to the table, since all the other jobs use cold weapons.
On a random note, it seems that her class-specific dance is from Beyoncé's Single Ladies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m1EFMoRFvY).
