We don't have a cooking section, but I figured I may as well post some stuff since others will probably find it useful and whatnot!

Right, so... This is how to make a restaurant style salsa like you'd find at a nice Mexican restaurant.

Ingredients:
1 can of petite dried tomatoes with sweet onions
1 can of diced tomatoes with green chilis
1 tablespoon of minced garlic

watdo
Just mix all of that together in a bowl, and there you go. Restaurant style salsa ready to serve.

Wouldn't it be better to make it fresh?

You know, buy all the veggies, cut them up, THEN mix them all together.

Hey now, you don't need to make everything hard to make something that tastes good. It's just salsa, there's no point in going completely all out for it when you can do something just as good with hardly any effort at all.

Step 1: Buy canned salsa from the supermarket.
Step 2: Serve.

How to make restauraunt style cheese dip:

1 cup of your favorite pepper (jalapeno?)
2 cups of white cheese
1/2 cup of milk

Steps:

1. Dice pepper AND REMOVE SEEDS.

2. Heat milk to simmering.

3. Melt cheese gradually in milk.

4. Toss in diced peppers.

5. Serve with chips.

Am I do right?

That isn't even remotely close to this.

For that, I tend to just buy a thing of Rotel then melt it with about half a stick of velveeta.

The only fresh thing you add is the garlic, lol. Unless the juices in the can somehow amplify the flavor.

That's called rotel dip, ain't it?

This is more of a white cheese dip thing. You can even pour it on buritos and other things.

The solution above is far more practical, especially if you're living alone. The rate at which you consume food is so much slower, stocking on up easily perishable foods is a bad idea.

You'll almost never eat it fast enough before it all expires. This is why I can't use fresh ingredients most of the times when I cook, and have to used canned or powdered forms.

Its also a problem since I don't have a car I can't do groceries as often as I'd like. I have to wait for my friend to have a day where he wants to go to take me.

TA also faces a similar issue where she lives ridiculously far from the groceries.

I'd like to use fresh ingredients myself. Its just asking for something more than realistic. I can't afford it either.

At that point, might as well opt to have a can of refried beans ready.

I'd like to know how to make delicious sauce for pasta. I LOVE MAKING PASTA. But I always just get the pre-made jars of pasta. Don't get me wrong though, so f*cking delicious.

Nowadays you're actually not saving much by buying raw ingredients and making it yourself.

Tomatoes have gotten nasty expensive.

The reason doing it yourself would be stupid and a waste of time is that you'd have to not only buy the ingredients but then you'd have to probably blanch a tomato to remove then skin then dice it, along with the other ingredients then be inventive with spices and whatnot, and overall it's just way more work, not a significantly better taste and chances are, it may turn out far worse, at a relatively similar or even higher cost.

This method is much much easier.

It tastes significantly different... Try it. It's like a restaurant, not like the standard can of salsa. Very different...

I like Ragu Super Chunky Mushroom, personally. If I do something like spaghetti I'll use that then some frozen meatballs as well. Turns out pretty good.

I should try this sometime. I bet it's really good.

On a side note, Nation should have a section for things like this. Like crafts, recipes, etc.

I've had canned tomatoes before, so I know how they taste. I also live in Southern California, so I've gone to plenty of great Mexican restaurants that use fresh ingredients. To me, there's a significant difference between salsa made from canned ingredients with salsa made with fresh tomatoes and chilies. It's just not the same, but I guess that depends on your experiences with Mexican restaurants.

Should redefine media center for a more broader sense of handy-works. It doesn't get as much use as it should.

Ah yeah, you're right. It should be re-named or given a new description. With the way it is now, it only gets used for videos and artwork.

Feels like eventually we'll end up making boards for everything like doujinstyle or 4chan has set up, and we'll really end up migrating from mabination to something more <general>nation.

Which would be neat I guess. Mabinogi doesn't have much life left in it, and Nexon is doing a fantastic job holding Vindictus by the throat.

Mabinogi 2 is taking its sweet ass time too.

Hey, as long as they get used, there really isn't a problem with them. The new(ish? idk, I'm pretty sure that came around when I was banned and I'm not sure how long it's been there) games section gets used quite a bit.

I fully agree with this suggestion, perhaps if we made a thread about it in the mabination discussion something could be done?

Getting **** done doesn't sit well with me.

I prefer to take the green couch in the back of the lobby and throw out comments every once in a while so that everyone can kinda hear it in the background.

Your Mexican restaurants and my Mexican restaurants must serve very different cheese/salsa, because the recipes for those in this thread sound like they'd be totally disgusting and bland compared to what I have where I live.

I'd eat just about anything anyways.

Skye, you shouldn't really judge in general, given your response to almost every discussion about food has shown you're a picky eater who finds many things the average person would be delighted to eat.

"Disgusting", in my standards has an incredibly low bar. I love food, and I'll eat food, and I'll enjoy food. Doesn't mean I'm a trash disposal that eats anything though. I can just about appreciate any kind of quality cooking.

Whether its the same as what you get at your own restaurant or not...

1 can of petite dried tomatoes with sweet onions
1 can of diced tomatoes with green chilis
1 tablespoon of minced garlic

Sounds like it would make excellent salsa, and I can appreciate that. Imagining it being used as dip for tortilla chips hot and straight off the pan, sounds amazing and makes me hungry.

My mom makes meatloaf from quaker oats, a pound of ground chuck, tomato paste, and onions.

Only one of those things she cuts herself. Can you guess?

I was really just meaning it in comparison. Had I not been comparing it, it sounds fine. But, compared to my local Mexican restaurants, it just doesn't sound appealing.

I did the exact same thing for my own salsa as well... expect replace the canned tomatoes with fresh tomatoes being diced, and mixed together with some chili powder.

There are dehydrated onions, which you can let soak in water or just throw in to re-hydrate them.

We always make them with fresh ingredients. They're not even hard to find here. ;~;
Or at least..not canned stuff. It feels different.
