View Full Version : The Urban Legend of Mabinogi

These are just Urban Legends of the Game. While a lot of them have no factual evidence on them, some may be tied to some phenomenon that happened in game. If anything, just take the above stories with a bit of salt and just read them for entertainment. If you have your own Urban Legend to share, please do.
----
Story 1: The Ghost of Ciar Dungeon
It is said that in the early days of beta and g1 there used to be a ghost of a male and female model when you enter Ciar Dungeon. They sometimes appeared in the middle of rooms or sometimes out of the walls. Both the male and female would be together and constantly stay in the same spot.
It is said that when players walk away from them, they will secretly change their head's position to look at them but as soon as the player turn their camera angle back, they will look away.
It is also said that if one were to see them, an omen will befall them in that they will die at least once in the dungeon.
---
Story 2: The Ghost of Emain Macha
Rumors have it that if you were to stay sitting down infront of the altar of Emain Macha's church for an extended period of time, that a girl named Iris, dressed in a pure white idol ribbon dress would appear from the entrance. She will walk around the church crying for the church officials to release her husband and that her family is dying.
At first she appears to be a player character because she doesn't have the npc tag, but when one talks to her, she never responds.
When she is done yelling and begging, she will curse the Emain Macha Priest and cited that one day she will get revenge and she will walk outside the door of the church. If the player chooses to go out as soon as she does, she will not be outside the church at all.
---
Story 3: The Secret Steam and Dry Ovens of Shadow Taillteann
Legend has it that there is a steam oven at Shadow World Taillteann in that if you click on it, all successes will be 99% and you will be able to make all synthesis recipe regardless of your Synthesis Rank.
However to get to this oven, you need to be in a certain Shadow Mission and pick the right oven the first time. Should you pick the wrong oven first, you will no longer be able to pick the Secret Steam and Dry Ovens of Shadow Taillteann.
Which mission and which steam ovens/dry ovens are speculations.
---
Story 4: The Memory of Crumena
It is said that even after Crumena's death, that his memories will forever haunt the player as long as he or she is in Zardine. Every now and then, the Roar of Crumena can be heard against the player, desummoning his or her pet. It is Crumena's curse after his death in g8 and his curse will manifest themselves now and then.
---
Story 5: Excalibur
There is a story about a devCat programmer who implemented a quest in which the player can obtain Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake in Emain Macha. However, news was that the programmer decided to scrap the quest because the sword was too powerful.
However it is said that the programmer never truly removed the quest and that the quest can be unlocked by first solving the secret puzzle found on Emain Macha's lighthouse on the small island which will unlock the quest for Excalibur.
---
Story 6: The Legendary Knight's Appearence
Rumor has it that if a player was to win 1 million duels, the Legendary Knight would send a quest to fight the player personally himself. The duel would take place underneath Emain Macha in a secret Arena and at night time.
Should the player defeat the Legendary Knight, he/she will be awarded the "Faded Champion Armor" which grants 30% melee/range/mana pd, +200 defense, and +40% protection that has the ability to equip two accessories and the "Legendary Knight" title which grants +100 strength and +50% Critical Rate.
Who this Legendary Knight is never known, for when he is defeated, he simply vanishes, leaving only his armor and title.
---
Story 7: The Legendary Palace of the Sky
It is said that if you were able to collect all dungeon passes in Erinn, including Iria's statues, and Peaca passes, they will all combine into the Legendary Sky Pass in which the party leader and his party will be teleported to a dungeon above the skies where they will fight Valkyries and other airborne creatures.
The reward at the end is the Spear of Longitnus, the first true spear of the game.
----
Story 8: Mabi Mabi Milk
If a player plays "Epona's Song" perfectly infront of a cow, sometimes the cow will award "Mabi Mabi Milk" which, when drunk, will grant infinite mana and invulnerability for 3 whole minutes.
---
Story 9: Field Boss Prophecy
Sometimes when you sketch the normal variation of Giant Field Boss Monsters, you will end up with a sketch of the Giant Field Boss, and the location where it shows is where it will spawn next.
---
Hope you enjoy it!

Most of these stories were things I picked up in my time in Mabinogi. Some were silly and some pretty interesting to remember.
Though I wonder how much truths some of these stories hold if some at all haha.

Obviously made up, I'm not entirely sure how serious you were being but none of these aren't particularly well crafted "legends". A good urban legend should have at least a trace something believable in it. Nearly all of them can be disproved readily too.
The first one is true , well, half-true. During CB or OB of KR Mabi there were a couple of humans in an unreachable corner of Ciar dungeon (in the black area). And they appeared randomly I think. There were screenshots of it, was discussed back in Guru long ago. Can't find the thread :c
Probably some test devs were conducting about who knows what, or a bug that they didn't pay much attention to -3-

Almost.
The Ghost of Ciar Dungeon I remember hearing back in the old days.
And hearing Crumena's Roar when just being in Zardine causing your pets to despawn does hold some truth. Though Mabi Mabi milk is just silly. xD
I remember the first one! Back before OB started :) A lot of people thought it was real XD Heck we made comparisons with .hack and such :D

I have one:
The Gay Marriage of a Giant and Elf"
It is said that if two players, one Giant and one Elf, of the same gender, went to every dungeon and every shadow mission available, at all difficulties, they would get corresponding titles of marriage, except they will both always be "_______'s wife".
I'm kidding. No offense to any homosexual players out there. Really. I don't want to make anyone upset. Sorry if I did.
But on the serious matter (the part where I don't want to offend anyone was serious), these rumors seem extremely unlikely.

They say, that back in G8, that Pierrick would appear in Dugald Aisle, and would sell items you couldn't obtain elsewise.
They say that the devs copied some OoT maps. There are a set of region files with the name "Zelda" in the pack file.
If you find an item named Nao's Headband, and equip it inside Ciar dungeon, a strange Goblin will pop up and sell you items.
There is a fake mana tunnel on the outside of the Couracle map. It never opens.
There is a rumor that there is 1 GM logged into the game at any given time.(This one's the least believable, amirite?)
It is said that those fairy figures made out of wood found throughout Uladh are where someone has died.
Desert Warrior Ghosts are rumored to be cursed Elves.
Arc Lich was actually an elf that went the path of Master Lich. Irinid sealed him away.

All I remember is the story of the ciar ghost story, havent heard of the others. Though there are many normal rumors that fly about, unfortunately due with hacking and glitches.
The giant bunnies on Ladeca are placeholders for small ones that can deal 5 digit damage when approaching the tiny cow.

Rundal used to be a hideout for pirates.
Manus was white on KR servers.
Ciar dungeon has two entrances. One of the entrances is inaccessible and leads to a tiny hidden village known as Orient. It has no NPCs and the only usable thing is a single sewing wheel.
The Weird Cat has an evil alternate.
Inflames, an NPC from Taillteann, is named after a director of Mabinogi.
The Goddess Stage, a stage for some cutscenes in which Morrighan appears and conveys a message to you, is an actual place in game. If you manage to get there, you can talk to Morrighan and she will respond in completely untranslated text.
Young Red Foxes have a glitched smash skill that can do well over 20000 damage, but their AI doesn't let them use it.

i remember some story that involved spiral hill. Think it said that if you went to spiral hill during a certain time during a thunderstorm you would get a random cutscene which ended with you getting stabbed by an old man. Then you pass out hearing a conversation between the old man and another character that you dont see.

Lol, I'm just going to throw this out here because it's happens to me a lot in missions and such.
Aparently some mobs feel sorry for you and despite their balance, dmg, your defense and protection, they will hit much MUCH lower than what they normally hit, but just once before they go to bashing your brains out. The last hit from a HM bone lancers combo did almost nothing to me and I didn't even have a shield out, and only rank 8 defense with normal clothes and two defense pendents on.

This thread is entertaining. xD
See if you can guess which ones are true of these.
1. The luck stat affects repair success rate, and so does the weather.
2. There are crop fields on the outside of the Tailteann map.
3. There have been more than four ways to get on the river in Couracle. One of these ways doesn't involve a glitch.
4. There was once a glitch involving the Ice Bridges of Physis that enabled you to warp outside the map in both Physis and Couracle.
5. The far east of Emain Macha, outside of the map, is shaped like an ice-cube tray.
6. On the outside of the Rano map, there is an upside-down tree.
7. In Couracle, some of the "trees" that are off-map aren't actually trees.
8. In Zardine, Raspa volcano is hollow with very little lava inside, and there's floating water in multiple places.
9. Alchemy is Science, in Mabinogi.
10. There is a door on the outside of the Bangor map that sits next to a lamp-post. It's label says it leads to Tir-Na-Nog, but you can't use it because once you get within range of doing so, it warps you away.
11. There is a "post-apocalyptic" version of Tara. It's located outside the shadow realm, and is missing a large number of things including the fountain in the square and the Pontiff's court. However, Hans' easel is still there, and there are working potato fields and a working door into the Pontiff's Court.
12. There is a signpost outside of the map in Avon with an inscription reading "You shouldn't be here."
13. Elemental charges experienced while using a staff, according to the game, 'belong' to the staff.
I'll see if I can remember a few others. Some of the above aren't quite so much of an urban legend, but, it's interesting to know which are true and which are false.

Already knew the Goddess Stage existed, minus the part of Morrighan being there. If you lagged enough during you first cutscene in G1 and G13 (I would always see my character at the entrance before being forced back to where I was) your character is there temporary as it is a means to load the map. Also, it's what is now being used when you create/rebirth your character.
Only goofy urban legend esque thing I heard of was that you would die if you used wm too much due to going extreme deadly.

Wasn't the post-apocolyptic Tara used for a generation teaser with the Tara guards all dead and stuff like that?
According to a friend of mine who played on the test server before G9 was officially released,if you sat on the grave of Cai's deceased lover at midnight when it's raining,a cutscene occurs where a white rabbit appears from behind the grave and speaks to the player. She told me that if you bring a pink flower from Del or Delen, the rabbit will take it and Cai's girlfriend will appear but won't talk to player and will run off. devCAT scrapped it for some reason.

Woah these are interesting. I don't have much but around Mabinogi you see those wooden carved people statues with wings, there's one in Morva Aisle, Dugald Aisle, and Dunbarton fields, there could be more. They could all mean something?
And, in like south-west Dunbarton if you go into a corner and turn the camera you will see a hidden sign that reads, "(Ad) Lowest interest rate in Erinn with immediate loans! Non-payment cards are acceptable! Bad Credit OK! Use Cameragirl's camera and enter Alby Dungeon. Yoo-hoo"

They have wings? I thought those were training statues for people with swords. I think there was a mention of those in "The Story of A White Doe".
And lol at the Ads. I've seen screenshots of those. I thought they were funny.

Devcat producer Eunseok Yi's young son, is suffering from an incurable hemiplegia. Many small snippets of mabinogi reflect this:
The NPC named Inflames in Tailtiean who is bedridden.
Rua's poor brother who is terminally ill.
Spirit.npc which hovers slightly above the wooden statues in area between Tir Chornail and Dunbarton. (sadly you need mods to see it, they are in perma hide)
Likewise, in the lighthouse at Emain Macha, there's a hidden npc. You need a special mod made by ummmm, you know who guild, to see the hidden npc. It's just called [][][][][] completely untranslated, and doesn't do anything. It could be just for an event or a future generation. I really don't know.
Simon is actually made by a novice intern at devcat practicing his skills. The director happened to like the funky movements and incorportated simon in as an actual npc.

There exists a private anvil owned by Taunes, a Giant of Physis...
From the outside, the anvil cannot be seen but upon gaining access of the house, the legendary anvil can be found.

The ghost pier of Port Cobh.
It is said that the keeper of Port Cobh's lighthouse, Ascon, is actually a ghost of a man who was wronged by pirates...
His sad tale of blackmail and tragedy lures those with pure souls, always willing to lend a hand...
Those who venture deeper and deeper into Ascon's story will find themselves more compelled to stay on the island and eventually, the pier will disappear, trapping the poor victims on the remote island forever...
Occasionally, if you look long enough, you may see bones of those poor adventurers washed up on the shores; the remains of those driven mad enough to jump off the island and onto their fate upon the rocky coast...

There was once a time when windmilling with a bow did crazy damage.
There's a secret sign in the cliff above ciar dungeon.
Fiodh dungeon's seal was broken before fiodh was released. The player that broke the seal is permanently locked out of the game after that.
You can wall glitch Rua's house and go into the void. If you keep going, you end up in Bean Rua.
A legendary sheep in Iria can level up and even defeat mighty field bosses.
Success Rates work on some sort of timer. Thus, it is easy to break normal odds of probablity such as failing edern two times in a row fairly often (1 in 10000 chance)
Devcat's staff has been getting more "ecchi" over time. Compare g1 and g14.

The ghost of Maiz dungeon:
My friend told me In Alexina during g6-g7 there was a player (a HUMAN girl, before anyone thinks its elf shenanigans) who killed herself, and when someone would go into maiz dungeon LOBBY, you could see the girl's text in the chat log saying "are you going to help me with this dungeon or not...?". My friend had this happen to her and she looked around the entire lobby as she kept seeing the text, but nobody was there.

Legend has it that if a person's on an island that isn't supposed to exist in NA mabi (or any version outside of japan, idk for sure), he or she will have more to do besides fish & metallurgy. If the person is on the island at the right time, he or she will have an opportunity to defeat a bipedal golden vermin...
I'll edit this post with a screenie of this "vermin" later today. Very interesting thread btw, but I didn't think I'd have to come out of lurking to bump something I liked. ;-; Was hoping it wouldn't die as soon as it started to. x:

I'd believe it, though I don't know how much this would add to it: During that Rainbow Box event, I listened to some music and opened boxes to the beat (the 3rd beat of every 4th measure). I with no failures I was able to upgrade from violet to red (but only once did this happen).

As much as Mabinogi Wiki helped contribute a lot of information to me and I am very much thankful for it, but because Mabinogi Wiki exist, the game lost some of its mysterious "mystique".
It's like playing a new game, already knowing how to beat it because the guide's always there or knowing every and minute future content.

Yeah, and really, there's only a few ways to hide things from a player-made wiki.
1. Make it extremely hard to figure out why/what/how/etc.
2. Constantly change things of this nature, so recorded data is never accurate.
Or, even better, have the company own the database, so player-base doesn't feel the need to make a detailed one themselves, and you can leave out the things you don't want on there. (As an added bonus, the database would probably be more accurate than a player-made one...)

It's really hard to not look at the wiki at times.
I remember a friend of mine who complained he can't beat g3 without the wiki's guide when it was down. Truth is, many aspects of the game can be beaten without the wiki since it was made with the intention of no guides.

Yeah, I'd say that if the game company owned the wiki, they'd put things like monster locations, drops, etc, as well as skill data and other things of that nature. No guides (well, maybe a sort of "hint" guide for quests, for the dense people) and no hidden game secrets.

This is true, which is why you'd resort to those first two options.
Although, if the game company's wiki provided the most commonly sought-after data (drop info, item info, skill info, mob info, etc), then there would be fewer people feeling the need to create their own wiki, and thus fewer people publicly exposing secrets in the game. This means that the secrets/etc wouldn't need to be re-masked quite as often.

The problem with us is that our own NA team is just localization, not a developer, so they can't sneek in special quest unless they got the dev team to develop it.
Oh interesting too.
