View Full Version : PM Abuse

A while ago and now more recently in the past 24 hours there's been some members PMing other members rather rude stuff that would not be tolerated in a normal post.
Unfortunately for them, some of those recipients reported the PMs to me directly or to other staff. And just now one member who will remain nameless has been permabanned for repeat offenses of this.
Do not use PMs to avoid the rules when it's something the recipient will probably report you for. Just because it is private does not mean we will not apply the rules to it if someone tells us about it. Reported PMs contain a quote of the PM itself, just so you know.

I wanna know who got banned. =x
I wanna know who got banned. =x
Yeah...Shouldnt we get to know who in our community got banned?
And just now one member who will remain nameless has been permabanned for repeat offenses of this. Um...Why? if there banned, permanently, whats gonna happen if we know who it is? I mean we could figure it out if we combed through members, or if one of the people say who they reported.....So just tell us please?

No you shouldn't.
That's an invasion of privacy.

How is that an invasion of privacy? Telling us what happened, who got banned, maybe someone we knew, or might wonder where is, is an invasion of privacy?

Yes, because they have the right for personal things to not be spread around.
Besides, if you combed through members, you would NOT see anyone that is banned anyway.

But we could see whose not here anymore.....And it doesnt seem that personal, they sent messages to people, and they were against the rules, and that person got banned, so your saying that the name of the offender cant be said? Ive never head that the name of someone who broke some rule or got arrested or something cannot be said.

You know, I always thought that banning someone who uses Private Messages is indeed
That's an invasion of privacy.
But that's just me.
I say people have to say what the need to say. Like, if it is not tolerated in a normal post, isn't it logical to take it in a PM then? Regardless, unless it's death threats or hardcore porn, private messages are private matters.

Private messages can be just as disrespectful as any regular post. Therefore if it is deemed in such a way, actions ought to be taken. Just cause it is seen between 2 people doesn't make it any different content wise.

Spewing messages of hate in public isn't cool.
Neither is sending hate messages to somebody through the phone or mail.
It doesn't really matter how somebody is being an ass, if they're being an ass at all then they're a nuisance to the community and should be dealt with.
I can make a guess of who it is, but I might be wrong. If anybody really cared then they should be able to find out... you know with all their posts remaining but with a strikeout name and "Banned" title.

The luxury to a forum is the "ignore" button on the user's profile. Honestly, I had to use it once or twice in another forum and drama died in about an hour upon use of it. Another point that I like to bring up is that there is a difference between the individual and the community. One person may be bugging one or two individuals, but unless it's the majority, then the person is affecting the community.
I'm not justifying that the person who made those alleged PMs deserves amnesty; in fact, it sounds like he or she was just being an ass. I am saying is that, there has to be respectable lines in the private messages. I do believe wise arguments end in private after all, assuming you can argue ends.
This is a first, and with any luck a last. I'm all for problems being solved via pm, but this was a case of just blatant harassment. No problem solving included.

Whether people can click the ignore button or no what they did is still harassment.

I had a concern about the private matters issue as well, but this was obviously about the harassment. I'm glad it was dealt with accordingly.
