Chinese is so ugh. There aren't any ABC's or something, I don't even know how to write simple words. I'm... not Chinese on the inside.

I asked my mom and she did it by memory.

Awww, I was going to link this the moment I saw the picture.

It's not that unique. Personally, I just consider Chinese, Japanese, and whatever languages that uses symbols to represent words the hardest languages to read. Speaking it however, is simpler than, say, English. Just gotta be careful how you say dem words for the languages like Chinese or Vietnamese.

Well, thankfully Korean is very different and uses a scientific alphabetic-style system to construct words.

http://thinkzone.wlonk.com/Language/Korean-big.gif

Learning to read and write korean takes like 2 hours at most.

http://thinkzone.wlonk.com/Language/Korean2.gif

Because of the structure and rules of the alphabets, there are no two different ways to say a constructed syllable, unlike English where the letter A can be pronounced in like 6 different ways.

The only problem I see with this language is that it doesn't have a letter F, which makes Koreans unable to discern between P and F. Another one they commonly confuse is L and R.

Yeahhh chinese

writing is such a pain
like I don't even

You can't sound out words at all
you either know it or you take a dumb guess based on the parts of the words and their meanings =A=

I took a mandarin class past year, mostly out of curiosity, grammar was piss easy pretty much, but pronouncing the stuff with all that tonal differences, say one thing in a different tone and it means a whole other thing :c, just have to talk a lot and practice I guess. And learning characters takes too much time too.

That reminds of a few years ago when my whole family was learning english and my dad was complaining about pork beef etc

WHY CAN'T IT ALL BE SIMPLE? IN CHINESE IT'S PIG MEAT AND COW MEAT

I have practically perfect pronunciations and my grammar is pretty good, but I'm illiterate.
I mean I know about 100 words or so. Thats it. I don't even know how to write my own name.

Interesting. That buffalo one was cool too. Now time to impress my friends!~
But, am I the only one trying to solve the riddle, here?

I could only think that the lions were stone to begin with and the arrows are a metaphor for something.
That or the water in Shi's house turned the lions to stone somehow :stress:

It also might be one of those expressions that are lost in translation, though.~
Maybe I'm not so alone after all! :skip:

That's pretty nifty, and I'm going to be learning Mandarin soon so it's good to get people's opinion on the difficulty level.

Ah, Lion-eating poet in the stone den.
Great poem. It just flows so well!
(The wikipedia article on it is pretty neat too.)

I really should relearn the language. It's been like, 6 years since I've used it.

I think it's a non-monosyllabic language problem. Just gotta invent a shorthand word because we're too lazy to tag two words together! I don't really mind, but it's really just more basic and simpler to say things like "pig meat" or "the colour of grass" instead of "pork" or "green".

Depends on what accent you decide to use.

Most Cantonese speakers I know pronounce Shi almost the same as Si. (For you english speakers out there, I don't even fucking know how to describe it. Lol! It's something like crossing a sneeze with an "egh" kind of sound. Or like a french, uvular L sound with an S sound first.)

It took me a while of listening to cantonese to hear the difference.

That's a bit like saying, "No, you're not learning to pan fry, you're learning to cook."

She is learning mandarin if that's what she's learning. Maybe it's more proper to say Mandarin Chinese, but it's not really necessary.

I meant, she's not gonna learn Mandarin German.
