View Full Version : My sister thinks it's stupid to value the life of a bug

):
I don't kill bugs unless I have to.
Though, I do move them.

I have a tiny house spider living in my personal bathroom
he keeps to himself and eats other insects in the house
but my sister wanted to kill him and I told her not to

"*SCREAMS LOUDLY* OMG ITS A BUG KILL ET KILL ET CUZ I HAVE AN IRRATIONAL FEAR OF SOMETHING THAT'S HARMLESS
IT'S KREEPY THO LOL"

I'm not saying that people shouldn't squish bugs
but I don't like people telling me what I should do and shouldn't do

Depends on the location.

Inside? Well, too bad.

I try and save most of the insects I come across, but I do have a phobia of spiders so 9 times outta 10 I will prefer killing it. Otherwise I try and get my Mom to deal with it.

Bugs like grasshoppers also creep me out, but I have managed to save a few of 'um when they start coming out in the late spring/early summer.

So, all in all, I'd prefer someone to take care of it for me, but if I'm alone and scared shitless of it and it refuses to go outside, then it's either gonna have lrn2 work with me or get squished.

Roaches on the other hand I will squish because they are truly dirty bugs that carry around a ton of diseases

If I can see it and it's not far enough or fast enough to flee. It's probably dead.

I don't mind them much. If they're not a Roach or something I know can be really harmful, they're either ignored or put outside

I don't particularly care much about bugs considering they don't really have much of a conscience or anything, but killing them just so is kind of... useless.

Knowing the kind of people that lurk around here, that probably was serious.

More disturbing than someone cutting open a woman's stomach to cut open the fetus to play with it's insides. (Not as disturbing, but you get my riff)

Well, if a child walks into an alley by accident...it's still his fault. He shouldn't have been such a delinquent. He probably became such a badass back when he was only just an infant and his dad made him listen to some Pac. To live such a life... This boy would have turned into such a hardcore gangster g if he was able to grow up a little. He would have fell victim to a drive-by from a rival gang anyway. It's a vicious cycle, he should have stayed outta the streets.

you don't walk into alleys by accident
and why would alley = death

He's asking if it is reasonable to expect something to die just because it turned up at some place where it wouldn't know it was unwelcome, and used a more dear to us example to get us thinking. It's not that hard.

Trying to compare the life of an insect to that of a child is still pretty silly, though.

Sure, it's good not to needlessly kill every bug you see, but humans and bugs are on completely different levels. Even moreso than animals and humans.

Some people also have phobias relating to bugs, so I don't see why they should have to suffer in the presence of a bug if it's literally impossible to get it to leave.

If that's a bad thing, then I guess I'm a cruel, heartless murderer of bugs.

Well, somewhat I guess. But the general principle still holds true. No need to kill/damage something just because one dislikes it to some extend.

As for phobias, behaviouristic therapy works wonders.

you have bacteria all over your body, and I'm sure many die inside your body this very moment, yet they had no idea they're not allowed inside your body

you probably ate a few spiders while you were asleep too

Except you can't consciously control the killing of bacteria and most of those who die due to your immune system probably are better off dead than in your body anyway, so that's not a good example.

First, that spider statistic is supreme bollocks anyway, second, again no conscious choice.

oh I'm just saying noone feels bad when bacteria dies, so why are bugs any different

it's not about whether they deserve to die or not

They aren't really that different as far as the consciousness is concerned (obviously there are massive differences biologically speaking, but that is irrelevant for our purposes), but it's still not necessary to kill them.
Obviously there are more than enough bugs so the handful of people hell-bent on killing them whenever they see them isn't much of a big deal environmentally speaking, but hey. I think it feels nice not do to something harmful merely out of spite.

I pretty much follow the rules of nature, as far as that goes.

Something invades my territory, it dies. It's true in the animal kingdom, so... if certain things are stupid enough to do so, then they don't deserve life.

That's my prerogative anyways.

I normally try to take any bug inside my house outside, cause well I'm really sensitive to anything living (why I don't eat meat x_x )

There's been a few cases where we couldn't get it outside, so someone else had to kill it and I'd end up crying and feeling really bad... /still hasn't forgotten those few times we had to LOL ;;

I get what you're saying, but it basically comes down to me not giving a crap about bugs.

If we were to consider them nearly equal to people and other animals because they're so similar, sure. But, I don't. I mean, bugs tend to live relatively short lives anyway, so it isn't entirely fair to equate it with killing something like a human or a tortoise. Then again, this isn't my main argument anyway. My main argument is "fuck spiders."

I don't know why but my fear/hatred of insects and arachnids has only grown through the years ._. I'd rather face a dog than a beehive or a lot of wasps.

this is how I feel
besides that little house spider's lifespan is like what? two weeks?
why not let him live his short life? xD

I would rather face the dog too. I would consider the beehive/wasps nest to be more dangerous.
