My first one with the badass looking Pikachu was pretty bad in my opinion, mainly because I realized I sucked at creating a background. So then I made another attempt at a signature using one of my many renders of Red (Because 4chan's Red Fanbase posts amazing pictures of Red that's not actually porn) :

I didn't do too much for the background (Just used a Gradient and Smudged the hell out of it), but would you say it's an improvement from my first sig or not? o3o;

I also would like some tips in making signatures. Only reason I made this signature was because I was bored, very tired, and REALLY wanted to go to bed, but my computer wasn't done defragmenting.

I'm no pro or expert or anything but this is what I'd have to say.

-It's much too dark and there is too much black in the right.
-Text is somewhat difficult to see and might want a different font.
-Personal Opinion: Render is too small and too far to the left.
-Effects could maybe use some work, there are all sorts of ways to do them.
-Border plix.

Anyways.

A common way to make a background would be to get a brush specifically made for smudging. There are some decent ones in the basic default set your given if you change the Brush Options a bit. Basically just create a smudged back ground for using copies of your original render image.

Can't say this is the best example but the first few steps of this tutorial shows a decent way to make a background using the render and smudging it.
