Just vacation. A friend of mine is dragging me along. It's pretty funny because her bf was apparently super pissed when she told him she's planning on going to Japan with me. I mean, why automatically assume that we're gonna do bad things while there? LOL :(

Where I work, SEs are basically sales people. :p I don't think that's a common usage of the title in most companies, though.
  4. Yoorah
Sweet! I'm really excited for you. :D Tell me about the details after I return from Japan around mid-June. xP
  5. Yoorah
Wouldn't know the details, but I'd say that's a safe bet!

    Any luck with job stuff?
  6. Yoorah
Oh look, someone implemented SDN/NFV. :P
  7. Yoorah
A lot of people confuse the two. Basically, SDN is about centralizing control of your network. You can see the whole picture from one point and you can set up connections across it much easier, since the controller keeps track of every device (as opposed to you going to manually configuring every router along the path on a network to make sure it works as you need for this new connection, or whatever.) NFV, on the other hand, is more about transcending the physical limitations of a hardware based router (I think I invented a new marketing term or something?) Things like letting you upgrade the performance of a router without needing to physically replace it (simply assign more virtual cores to it in the data centre), so you can do it much quicker, without sending out a technician and without downtime for the client. NFV would have been nice to get sooner, but it wasn't practical before, as it relies on x86 CPU performance for packet processing. With Intel releasing server CPUs with 18 cores each now, it's becoming a lot more practical to do things this way. And even now, NFV won't replace every use case, as dedicated network processor chips will always have better performance/efficiency.. it's just that we're finding that NFV can fit into a lot of places atm, so there's a market to fight for. :3

That poster looks pretty interesting (and quite professional looking!) Reminds me of Big Data stuff. I often think how amazing it would be if clunky and obscure government processes could be made transparent using Big Data and the resulting analysis would be used to influence decision making (rather than, say, partisan politics.) One can dream! D8

Good! And yeah, that one. Though it looks like they have a non-internship version of this position as well, and they're not asking for X years experience. :o Maybe you could apply to that one instead! But yea, aim high! \o/ Success = preparedness + luck. You've got the preparedness part down more or less, so you've just go to work to create more potential opportunities for yourself, which means trying to get into all the good places you can think of. :3

NFV is the idea of replacing complex network devices with simple ones, which need less maintenance, and moving the complexity into a program running on powerful servers in a data center. This makes it much easier to maintain these devices, since something like a software upgrade, for example, could be done on a duplicate VM in the DC, and once complete, you just switch the dumb router from the old VM to the new one. It's a lot easier than having to upgrade the software on an aging physical router, and then needing to reboot it for the changes to take effect (causing downtime in the process), etc. Even more so if you're an ISP with thousands of these routers that need upgrading!

You're pretty much spot on with SDN. Instead of an "overhead router," it's called a controller. As you can imagine, though, there are issues with this setup. What if the controller dies? You need backups. How do you make them work well together? Lots of work being done in this field.

Sure, do show the poster. Feel free to PM if you don't wanna post it here, or something.

That's totally not the way to go about it! These internships are designed for university graduates just like yourself. Nobody expects you to be a superstar going in there; you're expected to learn as you go (there is very heavy focus on the learning aspect.) You also shouldn't be worried about getting accepted and not being able to contribute--be more concerned with getting in in the first place, as these openings are quite competitive. Luckily, you have decent grades and a cool personality (being a girl helps, too.) Many of these tech firms are having career info sessions at various universities right now. Cisco had one last month for one of their university new grads internship programs.

You should definitely apply to that Meraki position; they're a nice company to work for and they've been growing like crazy. Check what Cisco has, too. Look around at other firms and try to get in. Being a fresh grad is your best chance to get your foot in the door of the top employers--it won't get easier if you wait for your skills to develop...somehow. Not to mention that people who work for companies like Meraki and Cisco tend to build their skills much faster than most, thanks exposure to cool projects and technologies, training material, easy access to mentors and helpful people who know a lot more than you do and push you to learn more, etc.

Go go go! If you don't feel confident, take the risk and go for it anyway. You've got nothing to lose.

I don't work with SDN but it's a very hot topic in the industry right now, as it's going to dramatically change the way IT is done in some areas. A new hot topic, slightly related, is NFV (Network Function Virtualization.) Main reason I mentioned it is that knowing about these technologies would possibly help you in the interview!

What do you mean by centrality methods?
  10. Yoorah
I forget.. are you graduating with a Bachelor's degree? If so, I think you should stalk all the tech companies and look for internships. For example, Meraki has a "Network Support Engineer Internship" position, based in SF. It's a paid internship and they give you furnished housing for the duration of it.

Things with me.. are quite hectic. xd Lots of stuff going on at work atm, which I guess is both good and bad. Looks like they're gonna give me another raise, which is nice.

Did you cover any SDN material in school yet? :o
