Well I don't really see it as giving up a better life. Is going to people who have basically rejected you for 18 years only now to have a change of heart after you can take care of yourself, really a better life? Who's to say she can't have a better life with him in Japan than she would in Scotland. And she's not being prevented from reconciling with her dad just because she's staying behind and if it were to really be the thing that prevents it, then I'm willing to bet that even if she went back they wouldn't really have reconciled.
And true with his heart condition he'll be a burden on her, but she's a burden on him as well. But I doubt ether of them sees the other as a burden. Her family has already proven they don't care about her enough to carry that burden, yet he cared enough that he didn't care if he died or not, he just had to stop her. And I know that's very cliche... but still I just like it more because of how their relationship was and that they actually have a future together. It's not so clear in the other endings that they have that.
But in the end if you look at all the possible endings, then one with Hanako should be the best possible result for all people involved. The only thing I have against her route is the H-scene comes close to being rape... I'd never be able to forgive myself if I ever did it like that to a girl.... I should add that my first time I got Hanako's good ending while making the choices the way I would have.

Sounds like you got the bad ending for Lilly. In the good ending she comes back and Lilly is the only one that has an after story after the credits.
