I'm not really acquainted with headsets I am afraid, and US and German prices might differ a lot from model to model, and I don't even know the current US price level.

Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic headsets are probably good since they are both made by very experienced and trustworthy corporations with lots of ressources, and I generally hear lots of praise for at least their upper range headsets.

I am afraid the only way to find a headphone you like is by diligent review reading and research about what matters in headset performance (I might be able to help you with this if a specific question arises, but don't expect too much: I am not an audio engineer after all!), and if somehow feasible testing - if you can do it under controlled conditions, otherwise the result won't be comparable. :P Also keep in mind that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so you'll have to get at least some kind of dedicated sound hardware to ensure the headphone isn't supplied with garbage signals, as onboard chips generally produce clearly audible noise from a certain volume level on even if the driver might have some nice (YMMV) DSP available.That is, if the headset/-phones you get in the end are good enough. I know it sounds absolutely dreadful when I plug my headphones into my mum's laptop, and it sounded -albeit not quite as much- icky when I plugged them into my dad's PC before I installed my old soundcard in it.
