    New to the Game

    I just joined Mabinogi, and I'm honestly extremely confused. My best friend said that everyone does melee and that it's boring after time. He said the magic is good but expensive and uses a lot of AP. He said that ranged is rewarding, but it requires me to raise blacksmithing (I think that's what he said), and that can be a pain to raise. Honestly, I'm really lost in this game and I want to learn just what it is I should do well with. And if there's anyone in Mari willing to help me, and don't mind helping a noobie, please help me

    Every class to play as is expensive one way or another. Find what you like the most, and try to get the most out of it.

    Ranged requires you to rank up Blacksmithing later on when you have higher dexterity. Thanks to the Edern's Blacksmithing Part-Time Jobs, it easily helps you raise Blacksmithing from Rank F~9. The rest is on your own to do for yourself. It is a an expensive life skill to raise if you are mostly buying the materials for it, like some of the harder life skills are, such as Tailoring.

    Ranged makes you rely on mostly life skills for Dexterity, which is the only gruelling part about it, after you've done the combat tab skills that give dexterity. Range is also unreliable as a human at the beginning, as well, but even if you're an elf, you'll be quite squishy at the beginning too.

    Melee is usually the start of people, since it's pretty flexible, and humans get easy no Artisan Upgrade required weapons required such as Gladius to rely on for some raw damage.

    Magic isn't that expensive, it's very rewarding when you get the magic tab almost completed or close to done. With Homesteads to fuel Mana Herbs, that cuts the cost by a pretty much lot.

    Alchemy is a good start as well, with Water Cannon and such, with some raw Stamina around 200 from Production Mastery alone.

    With the exception of playing as a Giant Ranger (which is pretty much impossible) you can tackle any objective regardless of your character's primary build.

    Giant Melee > Human Melee > Elven Melee (Damage output, versatility)
    Elven Range > Human Range (Damage efficiency over time, mobility)
    Elven Magic > Human Magic > Giant Magic (Mana Efficiency, reverse order for AP efficiency)
    Alchemy = Roughly equal

    In my opinion, "Giant Melee = Elven Range > Magic (All) = Human Melee > Alchemy (All) = Human Range > Elven Melee" overall.

    Alchemy is good for beginners. Eventually you'll hit a damage "glass ceiling" where other builds will start to take over in damage output/DPS. Alchemy also has a wide variety of support skills; ranging from the ability to freeze opponents, stun whole groups for a period of time, set up protection barriers and call a golem to use melee attacks for you. Damage is primarily obtained from each skill, weapon stats and enchants. Damage multipliers are obtained from mastery skills and weapon stats.

    Magic has a huge number of skills, though wand/staff selection limits the availability of these skills. They generally cost a large amount of AP to rank and a large amount of mana to utilize. It'll be difficult early game and late game (obtaining intermediate magic/capping intelligence) though you'll be an offensive powerhouse. Magic skills generally lack DPS but make up for it with sheer damage output. Magic skills also generally have a wide area of effect. Damage is obtained from each skill. Damage multipliers are obtained from weapon stats, intelligence, enchants and mastery skills. Generally, equipment has little affect on magic damage so mages can opt for survivability instead.

    Range is lackluster for beginners (lack of damage, unreliable, poor versatility) and mid-game players (lack of damage, poor versatility) but can potentially sport the greatest DPS of any "build". Damage is obtained from weapon stats, dexterity, enchants and mastery skills. Damage multipliers are provided by each skill. Humans lack the DPS and mobility of Elven Rangers but are still effective "end-game".

    Melee is the generic build that most people follow. It sports excellent damage output with variable DPS and mobility. Damage is obtained from weapon stats, strength, enchants and mastery skills. Damage multipliers are obtained from the skills themselves. Melee damage is primarily obtained from weapon damage.

    The guy who said you need to rank blacksmithing for range doesn't know what he is talking about. You could play this game for 9000 levels without ranking blacksmith.

    Also there are 2 resources (listed in the guide) that you should visit. The first is mabinogi wiki the second is the enchant database

    Read the guide. Visit those sites and get familiar with the game. Mostly right now your learning the physics of mabinogi battle, the layout of the maps and towns and how things like quests work. Since your human you can get a giant and elf for free.

    Also mabi is different from other MMO's with its rebirth system. There is no level cap and there are very few restictions on how you play.

    people needs to stop going so technical... you are scaring new players away with all those information..
    anyways, damage doesn't matter as much as they makes you think, this game is more about actual skills and strategy,you can be anything you want, you can choose to be a class, or you can just max and match skills and use the ones you like, don't worry too much about builds, thats for games like wow or dfo where you have a limit. its hard to make a fail "build" in mabi, no matter what you do you will always end up pertty good in the end. just remeber to have fun

    Trust me, some newbies need guidance. I fudged my build up so badly when I first joined Mabinogi.
    It's easier to fail at Mabi when you're knew than you'd like to think.

    one of the selling points of mabi is that you don't need to have a build, you can rank what you fancy, and if its not working go rank some thing else.
