Considering the prevalence of potions, I'm not sure why people are aghast at receiving damage through defense. The point is to stop the opponent's attack and give you a chance to resume dealing damage, while reducing the kb meter.
It's not as useless as many seem to think.
Protection yes, defense no.
Probably because stopping an opponent's attack and getting a chance to resume dealing damage is much easier, faster and more efficient with pets... specially AoE ones, but not necessarily.
