The picture was inspired by the song A Demon's Fate by Within Temptation. I love the song, and it very well suites the anime (IMO).
The quote (itself) that inspired the picture:
"What have you done?
Is this what you wanted
what have you become?
Your soul's not forsaken
you're walking alone
from heaven into hell"
If there's a detail about the picture that you don't understand, then feel free to ask. If you're as much a fan of the series as I am, the details should be obvious enough, but I doubt that they're obvious to everyone.
Like I said, I want to know if people would be happy to see a completed version of this before I even start to make a better copy.
It is indeed incredibly busy and messy. I can't make much out of it. Only thing I can really make up is the Walpurgis Night, Mami, and her tea.
Interesting picture. Perhaps it will look better in color.
However, perhaps you are going for a messy feel to capture the feeling of despair that a magical girl feels as she heads down the path of eventually coming a witch or dying.

It has the witch forms off all the main 5 girls, as well as Walpurgis nacht.
Kriemhild Gretchen (Madoka) is that black thing (on the left) that looks like it's stemming from many threads.
Homulilly (Homura) is the one that looks like she's knitting together part of (the bottom of) Kriemhild's threads. (Refferencing to what Kyuubey mentioned, Homura "fueling" Madoka's witch form with every passing timeline.) Notice how she's also using her own hair as the yarn.
Ophelia (Kyouko) is riding the horse that she "no longer knows the name of", and her face is kinda "hidden" in the flame. Kinda a representation of how she's kinda hiding in her stubborn and hot-headedness.
Oktavia (Sayaka - top-right) is bordered off by Homulilly's hat, and is falling (like in ep9 when Kyouko breaks the floor) and one of the water bubbles has a silhouette of Sayaka in it.
Candeloro (Mami - bottom-right corner) is holding a mask, and behind the mask you see her black face, which is crying. (She hid how lonely, scared, and sad that she really was.) Yes, she's pouring tea. I'd imagine that Candeloro can pour her own tea without using her hands..
You should know what Walpurgis is. I included Walpurgis because she fits the theme of the picture, seeing how she was the cause of many of the events happening to the characters, and if she wasn't responsible for the events (with the other three girls), she was responsible for the events with Madoka and Homura which set in place the events for everyone else. (Not to mention that it looks better on the picture, IMO.)
The stormy clouds add background, and not to mention the Kriemhild is always seen (in the anime) after defeating Walpurgis -- the skys are still stormy.

That crossed my mind, yes.
If you've seen the PSP game (Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable) then you'd know that the witches of Homura, Kyouko and Mami are not my own creation. :p
I haven't seen the PSP game for this. Still looks too messy. I think it will be better if you add color. Right now, it just looks way too busy. I'm not fond of busy pictures. Makes it hard to make sense of it.

Well, like I said before, it's just the rough copy. When I do add colour, I'm thinking of only using dull(er) tones (because Candeloro is like the only one who uses bright colours).
