At some point we have to decide that everything is relative and Kai, Vella, Evie, Fiona and Lann all have at least one very good weapon. Is Karok supposed to be anything more than possibly above average in that scenario?

If you're lag-less and pretty good at timing your attacks you can pretty much stay in the boss's face FOREVER, meaning that he has kind of Vella's ability to do constant DPS, but at a much much slower rate. Other than that, I don't see much else that helps Karok out, other than his Cestus buffs.

Remember that with ignition, Karok is getting a pretty large buff to Absorb Shock with both Pillar and Cestus. Pillar timings are a lot more lenient now and Cestus can trigger it on all smashes.

Though the issue here is that now he has the worst damage of all the classes. It's pretty much the Sword Fiona case where the only arguement in the class' favour is "survivability", which doesn't mean anything when you have no damage output.
