I'm on the hunt for Fallout 3 quality or better open-world games.
Meaning there's no obligatory missions or story line, do what you want, with multiple ways to accomplish the same thing.
If it has a modding community that's even better.
Right now the only title I can find that looks like what I want is Red Dead Redemption (pretty much fallout placed into a wild west setting), but at the moment there doesn't seem to be hope of a PC version.

Garry's mod?

gmod is more a sandbox game to screw around in, fun but not really an open-world game in the sense i'm looking for.
If you know of Fallout3 it matches the description perfectly.
GTA is also a little bit like what I'm looking for, especially the PC versions that have more flexibility, but it's not as good of an example as FO3 or RDR.

There is rumor that bethesda is making an oblivion mmo... but it's just a rumor. Atm tho, no there really isn't a mmo like fallout 3. It wouldn't even work with online becuz u can't do everything u want haha. You can't just kill all the NPCs or steal stuff, then wat would other players do ._.
But yea, Gary's Mod is good for that sorta... takes a lot of RPing tho sometimes.

Fallout New Vegas. Wait, you already knew that.

I didn't mention MMO o.o
Not sure if it's even possible to make this type of game as an MMO, especially since I intend to hack the hell out of it after my first play-through.
I would actually prefer it to be single player.

Well, any of the Elder Scroll games fit what you're looking for. Sure, they have a plot, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to ever do it, ever. There's a good bit of mods already made, and is probably as easy to make your own mods for it as FO3 is. Probably only thing that's bad about it is that there's DLC for it that you have to pay for, so while you can mod the hell out of the game, you won't have access to everything (assuming no pirating, which knowing you, you won't care cause you can probably find some online anyways).
Though, the Elder Scrolls is more fantasy than FO3's Sci-Fi theme.

I didn't play all of them but I played a good bit of the latest one whose name i forgot, oblivion something or other. I liked that one so I might get it, same guys as FO3 so can't go wrong with that.

Morrowind (same as fallout and oblivion but better if you enjoy slow and steady role playing), Gothic series, or wait till New Vegas comes out
links for New Vegas-
Fallout: New Vegas - The Vault, the Fallout wiki - Fallout: New Vegas and more
i refuse to recognize oblivion as a good game (a good game with mod though, but not a good game)

Oblivion wasn't that bad. Except there were a few issues that let the vanilla game be extremely easy to play (Especially that one Chameleon trick where you apply Chameleon to all your clothes and you are never seen. Ever. Game on extreme easy mode).

Well, if you want a MMO, I can give you:
Myst Online: Uru Live - Home
Open source game where you explore the world, and help to expand that world.

Morrowind you say?

But no seriously. Great game. The graphics are outdated but I still enjoy going back and playing it once in awhile. One of my top favorite RPGs of all time.

Morrowind is annoying when it's, "Your spell failed."
Oh okay, I can understand that. I'll just be a melee then.
"Your attack missed."
What? No it didn't. I most definitely hit him. Look I just hit him 8 more times.
"Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed.Your attack missed."
"You got killed by a crab. GG. You suck."
That's one of the things I like better about Oblivion.
