I still don't get why he committed suicide.
He transfered into independent study; it's not like the bullies came to his house to taunt him. Then he should have just called the police.

Going and telling your parents you're gay, at 13 can be one of the most terrifying things. It's an absolute NO in the head.
You have to think like him. What would you do?
Remember, you're panicked out of your mind, and every day, you are put through this.
There is not much else that [you think] you can do.

This is just a really terrible week...
It's really depressing, but those bullies got punished in the end, I suppose.
I'd feel like crap if I knew that I was a cause for someone dying.

@Phunkie
lol I was bullied 5th to 6th grade and I came home everyday crying.
But I didn't decide to commit suicide, there were too many good things in life to give up. Those poor bastards didn't worth enough to ruin those for me. Instead I decided to face the problem. First, I intimidated them. Next, I talked to my homeroom teacher for advice. Finally, I went to the principal's office to discuss about the problem. The bullies obviously got in trouble and they even said sorry to me. By summer, we even became friends and played ps2 together.
Now you could say that this works because I'm straight. But it is not like homosexuals are not protected by the law.
You know, if I lived in a generation earlier, the principal would have just laughed at me saying that I'm asian. But would I have just gave up? no, I would have saved my anger and frustration till I would become an adult and lead an anti-racism movement or something. I could have been the asian MLK. xP (just showing potentials)
Ya so you can't really say that I haven't been through as much as this pusay here.
GG.
I just hope you're bullied more.
And believe me, being bullied in 10th grade is bad. Until you know how it feels to be OLDER THAN 10 AND BULLIED, don't say anything. Please.

Although all those puberty hormones could make him all emo ish, this world we live in is more homo friendly than ever before. I'm sure he could have went to a gay-straight alliance meeting. Come one he lived in California, there are plenty gay pride parades everywhere.
The problem with this kid is that even though there were thousands of allies around him, he chose not to get help from them.

Perhaps he did not know of them due to being a recluse? If I were bullied every day, would I want to go and find others being bullied for the same thing?

You do realize, at 13, that the 'badasses' all pick on others. If an adult tells them that gays are good, and friends, it all backfires.
I mean, if this happened, there must be something wrong.

It is part of human nature to seek for allies when in time of trouble.
Of course any sensible human would have went looked for help.
@Xiya's previous post: Come on, by middle school and up, people should have learned enough to seek help when they are being bullied. Even if their school sawked ballz and the faculties weren't able to help, they can still look for help from national organizations against bullying. If all else fails because the nation and its government hate them, they can still build up their anger and use that to fuel their eagerness to learn so they have the power to defeat those who hate them.
Also, by then they can also choose to be a shut in and not care about the real world.

Perhaps because he was only a kid, he couldn't do much at all. Not all children can just get out of their house and do whatever they want, ya know.

Well, what help?
The obvious ones aren't so obvious.
Going to the police, authority, you feel that's more cowardice. Having someone else deal with it.
Another problem, you feel you're not credible enough. It's not enough to worry them over.

Are you kidding me? Were just as homophobic as ever, even worse is that the kids don't care. If your gay, they don't like you because of that and if its guys making fun of you....do I even need to explain? We might be closer to getting gay marriage but that doesn't mean its still accepted (especially by the younger generation). It's like making fun of fat people, you do it cause its funny, and makes you glad your not fat.

On a semi-related note, I just saw a segment on the news about kids learning jujitsu to deal with bullies.
abc33kr reminds me of Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Ever heard the term 'don't feed the troll'.
Bullies are kind of like irl trolls, the more attention you show what they are doing, the more entertaining it is for them to keep doing it.
If you want to defuse something, getting other people involved is not going to accomplish that.
I'm sure it was embarassing for him, if he asked someone for help then he'd really have to be forced into admitting something about himself which he just might not have been ready to.

Abc, you are blaming the poor kid because he didn't know what to do.
Are you serious?
In a fire, people can sometimes go crazy. Is it right to blame them for panicking? Of course not.
Growing up as gay at any middle school is hard enough. Heck, going to middle school is hard enough. Not all kids have a good relationship with people or even their parents. Not all kids communicate their problems to their parents.
All I'm saying is that you should be have more compassion, especially since you know what it is to be bullied. You can't blame it only on the kid, as you're doing now.
If my brother committed suicide after years of being bullied and somebody called him a pussy for doing that, I would honestly tell you that you have no right to speak. You didn't know my brother, you didn't live through his situation.
You don't know exactly how many times this poor boy was harassed, nor do you know how many times he did actually seek help. I am gonna tell you straight up that I didn't always tell my teachers in middle school when someone called me a fag. And I didn't get called a fag because I was gay; it was because I was quiet and never started trouble.
Brian, that was his name. Annoying ass guy who never backed down. He pretty much made me hate all of 6th grade. Oh man. But yeah, I didn't kill myself, but I could see why people would do it.
Suicide is like relief for critically depressed people. Just like how you take Tylenol or Advil when you have pain; that's your relief. Sure, if you don't take the pill, you will eventually feel better, if you're strong. If you're not, you could just be hurting for a really long time.
I don't agree with suicide and if my brother killed himself, I would probably blame it on myself. I'd probably blame him. But we have to look at the bigger picture and also include those who drove him to suicide, because they too are responsible.
If I have a bad leg, it's not my fault I don't walk up the stairs. I could, but I don't because it's hard for me. Someone can't possibly blame me for that.
But yes, people should seek help and it's sad that he didn't do it. Just don't call him a coward because he didn't make the choices you would've. Anyone can be desperate, anyone can be depressed. It happens.
