Black Mongoose in Maize Prairie Ruins. Or, I used to go to the Kobolds near Dragon Ruins in Gairech.

The mongeese are spread out enough that you wont get much of a penalty

Yeah, but if you move around properly, you can avoid the penalty.
The best way for EXP as a pet is going on a Ciar Advanced run with a buddy, and with a "All to Finish" party in which you take all the finish with Finish set to "Anybody". But since you said solo, best way is Black-Tailed Mongoose.

Provocation ADV or HM. Just let the pet die in the middle of the arena and keep it dead the whole time. My griffin got like a little over 100% at level 24 or 25.

During 4x exp, I trained my Griffin by leaving it out as I ran Rundal Normal HM.
But yeah, Mongooses are good.

Train it by doing dungeons and keeping it out,
or field bosses...

You can train Griffins at Balrogs by hitting it, flying up, landing, hitting it again and repeat.

Instead of Ciar, just run Rundal Normal. You'll die quite a bit from Flying Swords, but since pets don't have blessings, you can easily respawn back to the Goddess statue and continue on. I got my Griffin to level 25 from 2 full Rundal Normal runs. I suggest preparing some pots in that pet's inventory though, since they take quite a bit of damage and the Goddess Statue doesn't heal all your HP. Walking speeds are way faster so running back to the room you died in won't be much of a problem as well.

I'm planning on eventually rebirthing and then training my borzoi to level 80+
I guess i'll have to spam the black mongeese.
