Weapon choices?

  Claymore is the highest crit weapon to obtain 100+ damage. It's trading 4 damage for 12 crit in comparison to the Dustin.
  
  A Claymore can get 88max, 45crit with gem upgrade.

  Dustin Sword sits at 76max, 43crit.
  
  Therefore I would pick Claymore for either max or crit. Dustin for pure max, and Dragon Blade only for balance and easy repairs.

  Note: A strong, non-ego sword will require a lot of dex, as well. I'm talking about upgraded broads/battle swords. Gladius are typically what are recommended to use until you reach that high dex.
  
  Also: Dustin swords have low balance, as you can see, which also requires high dex. I'd recommend the 2h, claymore, or db to start off. I recommend picking up a dustin sword right now anyway, though, as this event is making them common.

  IMO you don't really need to grind life skills for melee.
  Assuming you just dabble in the easy ranks of life skills (ie. Playing Instrument) after Rank 1 Refine, you should be able to get at least 80 Dex without any actual effort. If you also have Rank 1 Combat Mastery, that's enough to use weapons of ~35% Balance without going crazy over low-end damage. You don't need 80% Balance to have stable damage (I still only have ~60-75%), so you can put it off in lieu of increasing damage if you want to.
