Genre: Comedy, Drama, School Life, Shounen
The hilarious misadventures of the "Sket Dan"; a couple of high-schoolers who help out people as part of their club activity. Himeko, the violent "yankee"-girl with a soft spot for cute things. Switch, the brainy otaku who only talks via a computerized speech-application. And Bossun, the atypical leader of this looney bunch.
The manga focuses on the misadventures of the "Campus Support Group" or "Sket-Dan", of Kaimei Gakuen, a club devoted to solving any and all problems brought to it by the staff or student body for the general improvement of campus life. Due to its general lack of meaningful assignments and unglamorous 'group of handymen' reputation the organization is treated with widespread contempt and it is composed of only three members.
The story is told through a series of short, self-contained stories focusing on cases undertaken by the Sket Dan, usually told in the space of one to two chapters. Cases to date focus on a variety of issues from more humorous cases like chasing monkeys around the school or helping a wanna-be samurai find out why he cannot win kendo tournaments to more serious cases that hint at Onihime's violent past or deal with near-terminal illness.
Characters from previous cases also often make cameos in later ones and recurring storylines, such as the Sket Dan's rivalry with the school's student council.
Of course, this series begins as a comedy parody of other series, like Seitokai no Ichizon, however, just with that series, the protagonist only puts up an act. When Bossun becomes serious in his misadventures with his friends, he can be very reliable and very insightive. If I had to really compare this series, it would be similar to Seitokai no Ichizon, with a mix of Detective Conan.
Not until the later chapters 42-44 the (Switch-Off Arc), 57-62 (Ogress Arc), and 82-90 (Happy Birthday, Happy Rebirthday Arc) do you see the reason how the protagonists how together and you'll learn how they act the way they act. Although you start off reading on their misadventures, you understand early on that their actions aren't for naught, with most of them helping others in an awkward way, that alway teachers a life moral and lesson. These Arcs explain how and why these three people have set out to do so, and how their Leader, Bossun, become so involved in the gathering of the Sket Dance group.
