Bah, my colouring is still youtube-quality.
I can't get the feel of professional gradients. And hair is such a pain to colour.

Your basing em off pictures then (i.e carbon copy)? Or free drawing?
Carbon copy meaning through memory, yeah. Almost everything you see out there is based off something else because people are always affected by something else they've seen earlier. I tend to remember particular poses to use them later if I could. But however, some people do say drawing by memory is considered as freehand sketching. I wouldn't go against that either.

Thanks for the advice.
So, you make visual novels? As in hired, or just fan-made?
Both. There is this full fledged group that's requesting me to join in during my IAP (
Intern, basically. You work for the company as requested by the school for additional grades. This is required for all students.) to draw for them. However, I'm not satisfied with my current level of skill, which is why I'm not in that group right now. I'll be in there when I feel that I'm good enough to draw for a paid job, though.

Studying the art of others is always a good way to get better. I need to pick that up ;_; but I'm so un-motivated to draw anything.
This.
Also, your art is really good!
I dunno why, but whenever I try to do lineart, it looks blocky, unnatural, and bad looking in general.
And whenever I try to make lineart with a tablet...it looks uber sketchy and messy. :l

Expand it to 800% and then do your lineart.

I just use vector in SAI.
Super smooth and you can thicken the lines with the pressure tool or draw it yourself.
You can change the colour and move it around later without messing up your drawing by erasing.
It's easy, too~

I always get told making carbon copies is basically that I can't draw :l

Sensei, please teach me how to draw such beautiful fingers/hands. Also, although Photoshop may not be the best program to do lineart in, I find that using the pen tool is extremely helpful. To get a faded line, just set your eraser (round, blurred) to around 20% opacity and stroke away at the ends.

I use Photoshop to do lines. Sometimes, many quick strokes can be better than a single long one.

Well, I currently use Photoshoop, I have SAI but I don't use it that much because I'm not used to it.
I'll try it, I guess~

No, because I got sick and tired of it.

That is a really good picture you ended up with. :o
And the whole OP is like an awesome tutorial.
I never thought of shading things with colors other than
tints/tones/shades of the base color & black/white/gray.
Reading this thread has been super helpful. +rep
