So should I continue reading this?
I stopped after the one-shots and am not sure if I want to bother reading this again.
Well, that depends on what you saw in the plot. If you saw the plot to be about a Demon that is very different from the average view of what a Demon is like, and he's more of an Angel that helps humans, then keep reading. If you saw the plot to be about a Demon Defensive Lawyer and thought of it as a Phoenix Wright Spin-off, then still keep reading because that's a subtle side story now.
Moreso than Kucabara maturing throughout the series, it's more about how the characters around him are changing because of his abstract nature as a Demon of the underworld. Maybe it's cliche, maybe it isn't, but most of the major 'Antagonist' are conforming to his side, because they see the good nature Demons and Humans co-existing, oppose to a Demon that massacres everything in plain sight. The way that the series is going, they're using the 'Defense Devil,' as a side story to how Kucabara is the balance between Demons, Humans, and God. The actual story seems to be about how there is no real good, no real evil, but when Kucabara, the pure hearted 'evil' Demon fights for humans with God's authority, there is a messiah and Saint of sorts that can balance out how each species views or controls the other. Kucabara is as a matured character as any can become, it's those around him that develop more as they come to understand his philosophy that everyone can exist together, and those that are cast aside or left astray, he'll 'defend' them with his knowledge as a 'demon' and become their 'savior.'
I do recommend continuing with the series, because that plot I assumed for myself. The very least, it doesn't linger on a 'filler' arc for too long, and even then, they explain enough but not too much.
