So I've been profing my heater shield, and I was wondering which upgrade path I should take.
+2 Def/+5% melee PD or
+10% Melee PD
I already took the first upgrade path (+2 def) but now I'm beginning to regret it. The difference is just so insignificant, I'm even thinking of starting over.
So which one would be best, def or PD?

Usually PD would be best. 2 Defense isn't too large of a difference.

%10 MELEE PD!
I wish I would done that on my Kite Shield. I opted for 2 Def. Silly me.

no defense is not always the insignificant thing.
why the magic tank of NA mabinogi, Zyrus, upgraded his dragon shield to have +2 defense instead of a PD
although PD sounds useful. it only works 5% of the time
while +2 defense works 100% of the time
many people will disagree with me and flame me, but truth is truth

Thanks, that makes me feel a bit better... but I think I'll try and sell for now.

Pretend a Shadow Lancer, with a three hit combo, does 60 damage on you. For simplification, let's say it always lands a three-hit combo.
Defense Upgrade
1st Hit: -2 Damage
2nd Hit: -2 Damage
3rd Hit: -2 Damage
Assume 100 combos, you'd block 600 damage.
PD Upgrade
1st Hit: 5% Chance to block following attacks: -120 Damage + Damage reduced (dunno how much)
2nd Hit: 5% Chance to block following attack: -60 Damage + Damage reduced
3rd Hit: 5% Chance to block: Damage reduced
Over 100 combos, you'd block roughly 600 [1st ping] + 240 [2nd ping] + ??? [14% x Damage Reduction]. Well over 840 damage.
Of course, theoretical and situational numbers don't exactly mirror actual use, but generally PD will save your skin way more often than Defense. Unless you're running easy things with weak hits: like Fiodh or Alby Int.

The big difference guys is when your in mana shield. 1 def = closer to 3-4 def. 2 def isnt much but since I am always in mana shield (with 300+ int) the 6-8 def goes along way. And the dragon shield has a little advatage of still having 10% melee ping along with the def upgrade. I do have 3 beholder shields each with full ping upgrades for different situations. (range, melee, magic). I am trying to get another dragon shield through synth. That one will be all ping. But both options are equally good.
90% of the mobs in mabi do 1 damage to me now anyways so having extra "ping" damage reduction no longer matters. Having the extra def/prot matters more in Adv HM dungeons/missions and peaca...for me at least.

i heard there are 2 gem upgrades for heater, which can be used both times. +2 def and +3% ping or something. that's why my pro friend was explaining to me that heater > hetero overall.
can someone tell us what jewels are required for those 2 upgrades?

Justified wrote on 2010-04-26 00:12
All shields have 2 Gem Upgrades I think, and there are 3 to choose from but they vary from shield to shield.
On my old Kite Shield, my Gem Upgrades were +3% Melee PD and +5% Range PD.

Heater Shield
1st - Melee PD +3% (5cm+ Ruby, 3cm+ Star Sapphire, 1cm+ Topaz)
2nd - +2 Def (5cm+ Jasper, 3cm+ Star Sapphire, 1cm+ Emerald)
Heater Shield vs. Hetero
1st upgrade : Both get Melee PD +3%
2nd upgrade : Heater gets +2 Defense. Hetero gets +1 Durability
However, the Hetero has +6 PD upgrades, while the Heater gets +5.
After upgrades...
Hetero = +15 PD
Heater = +13 PD +2 Defense
If I've given any wrong info, please correct me. :]

And heaters are generally easier to come by and have nicer colours. :D
Could you remind me who I go to for heater gem upgrades?
