I've fished forever and a half. It's just random items so far, no equipment at all. The big fish is just a fish for a quest though, it gives +1 to the stats. So the items? I'd say they're not that great, but the fishes go for a tiny bit of money because of the 50 fish quest.

I just got the giant fish. :D
It's actually quite easy when it's coming right towards you. The school just happened to spawn right in the direction I was facing, so I got the first few shots before anyone else did.

And yes, I can confirm it's called the Violent Tahtich.

The other people on the boat said that they've made lots of gold off selling the big fish, people buy them on the market for 25k each or something.
