just wondering since the cat's doesnt know which edition is good or not
generally the cat is looking for the most features
friendly user interface is a plus and the cat would like it if it didn't suck up the computer's resources.
the cat wants to mess around and such
and there are templates that are photoshop only

I really like CS2 and CS3, and they're what I've used the most. CS5 is the newest, so it probably has more features than those two, but it's like, $700.

Is it bad that I have a pirated version of it that works just fine for free?

Is it bad that I've never paid for any of my editing programs, and they were pirated as well (except CS4--didn't pirate, but I didn't buy it.)? I didn't say he HAD to pay for it, I just told him the price.

CS5 is awesome. If you're a student, it's 80% off too.

Moved to Tech Support.
I honestly say get CS5. They don't support anything else anymore.

They won't support CS5 either if it's pirated. I've never met someone who paid for photoshop, and I was in a class full of mac-using graphic artists.

I lived with Photoshop 6 (found a disc in my house somewhere) and tbh, it had all the features I would ever need.
Photoshop is so powerful that for average use, you can go as far back as you want and you'll still get most of the features.
I am using Photoshop CS2 (pirated) at the moment, and I can tell you I'm beyond satisfied.
I tried CS4, and I was completely wrecked at how bad the interface was. WRECKED.
Haven't tried CS5.

You'll rarely find CS2 stuff.

Well they upgrade to what people want. But, I agree my CS3 -> CS5 was like O_O WTF...

Here's my opinion on photoshop:
CS2 - Nice, I like this. Really awesome photo-editor/image maniputator/painter plus/blah...
CS3 - CS2 with more features. Yum!
CS4 - Even more features, but at the expense of an intuitive user interface. It can be worked with though
CS5 - User friendly? Forget that, we're just gonna make the interface over complex, unintuitive, obstuctive, totally broken and completely un-stable! Hurp-durp. (Seriously, AVIOD THIS AT ALL COST)
Right now, I'm using Paint.NET which is similar to the older photoshop and has a lot of cool extra plug-ins that are fun to play with and fit my needs very well. It's a freeware program that works really well (and you don't have to pirate it either ^_^). The only downside is that its layering tech lacks the level of functionality that photoshop has, but that's something that I can live without. And I'm pretty sure the community has addressed this a few times so hopefully that will be fixed in the future.

Seconded for Paint.NET. It's too bad OP wants to work with PS templates.

Most people should be able to accomplish just about anything they want to get done with the simplest image manipulation softwares. I mean, sure you can't really use MS paint, but most freeware out there can handle just about everything that needs to happen.
Photoshop is like... having a smart phone compared to a normal phone. Its got all these features designed for high level business and work use and most kids who get their hands on it just dick around on facebook and youtube.

"Connections".
I doubt there is a single person here who doesn't know how to get themselves a free copy of CS5.
I'm just saying, Paint.net isn't bad at all for anything.
