For Ice Crystal drops, do they drop from breaking the big chunks of ice left after breaking the initial ice pillar, or does only breaking the pillar count?

Just wanted to know...I usually break everything to be on the safe side, but I see people just break the pillar.

They only drop after the initial pillar is broken, the chunks yield none.
