I have this feeling that having a second opinion will help, so I decided to ask again here.
While it is impossible to get to Rank 1 this year, I was considering about Rank 6 because it can hit 3 monsters with one charge. I have enough AP for it.
I will get to Rank 1 eventually but this might only be possible next year because I want some AP saved up for Sword mastery.
This is mainly for rafting for blacksmithing purposes.
My thunder is currently at Rank 9. Does Rank 6 make any much difference?
Thanks.

What are the alternative skills you can rank instead?

Almost nothing.
The final important skills that I want to rank are arrow revolver and final hit (both R4) but they are not very necessary due to my playstyle - I use dustin silver knight sword.
What I really do want to rank is Blacksmithing.

For rafting, we are talking mostly about 2 skills. Crash shot and thunder. Ranking Either of those will be helpful. I would say yes to ranking Thunder to r6 if you Don't range. Crash shot at rank 1 (highly useful) will actually be more efficient since you won't need mana pots to be effective.

I do range, but not very often.
I have a little less than 300 dex. I think about 279 base dex to be exact. I'm also worried about the AP costs for crash shot. If I invest all my AP into Crash Shot, I can get Rank 5 by the end of this month. It's just that I do not know if the damage is sufficient with hobgoblins. I could be happier using Range if it can be as efficient as Thunder as I used to start off with Arrow Revolver in the rafting area.

High ranked Thunder compliments ranged combat, as the skill gives excellent mana and willpower. If rafting is your objective, rank Thunder instead of Crash Shot. If you have an interest in range, rank Crash Shot.

Marginally, you get more benefits for every AP spent until R6. From R5 to R1 your "returns" start diminishing, which is natural in this type of skill. If your opportunity cost is Arrow Revolver or Final Hit, I would say even if you decided to go for R1 Thunder, you would still be using your resources (AP and Time) efficiently (since all you need from the time being is ingots) . So yeah, R6 or R1 if you have the AP.
Wait, I read you want to save AP for Sword Mastery... then R6.

I think I'll go Thunder. The will is not something that I want to miss out on and range is pretty unpredictable due to the % to misses. Thanks for the advice.

rank 6 it... keep it there... (its easy to rank so no worries via cp)
crash shot and more dex is always needed and though mana may be good (manashield)
your gonna rank everything eventually anyways so dont worry ^^

I have my Thunder at r6, and i'm loving the fact that I hit three hobgoblins for a single charge.
Nonetheless, you should also notice that the warriors are significantly harder to kill with only a single charge at r9, so I encourage you to rank your Thunder.

It's now R6 and I love it.
I like how I can get ingots at the middle bend without problems now.

I would have to offer my two cents on crash shot, despite only having r9 on it.
Crash shot is definitely solo-raftable (and a little tactful use of play dead can certainly help avoid hobgoblin warriors). On one occasion I was able to achieve 31 stars to the 2nd dock, cashing in then and hitting 25 at the 3rd dock. This only with r9.
If you truly have that high dex, you would have even less problems than me, as you'd be dealing enough damage to kill anything you touch without crits.
However, I would have to agree that miss % is bollocks. While I personally dislike it, you can aim the shot for a bank pre-emptively and typically get 2 shots per bank reliably. Fine(st) arrows and a higher range bow, such as an elven long bow, or an ego LLB/Wing Bow would certainly mitigate some of these problems.
However, while my explanation is a tad late, I feel it would be adequate for anyone torn between the two in the future.

I'm worried about a few things with Thunder.
One is about the mana herb problem once they set in to fix something that was unintended. If that really happens, I will need to spend a little more time at rafting to get mana herbs.
The other issue is with the reduction in damage (20%) due to the balance update. I have 270 int and just 276 dex.
Someone told me that normally people with R3+ crash shot and 350 dex will do well there. I'm really not too sure.
