It's just the glow. Normal unicorns do that too, but without being able to change the colors, it's only noticeable on the black ones.

The flash you speak of is just a fast glow.
For example:
Red -> Pink
Blue -> Light Blue
Black -> Grey/White
Only execption is white, as:
White -> ??????
