You'd hear almost like a 'chime' sound when your hit connects I believe.

There is a visual flash and a pretty awful sound (reminds me of those toy hammers you get at the carnival). The visual cue might not be there if your graphic settings are too low and if you got music going on then you might not hear the sounds. Try changing those up.

Be aware criticals only happen with smashes unless you're using the hammer, the hammer can crit even with normal attacks. The most noticeable parts about it is the sound it makes and a much larger flash when attacking.
