South Korean Boy Kills His Mother After Arguing Over His Hobbies

  SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean police say a 15-year-old boy has committed suicide after killing his mother in a fight over Internet games.
  
  Police official Jung Yo-il said Tuesday that the student hanged himself. Jung says the boy's mother had been strangled in their home in the southeastern port city of Busan.
  
  Jung says the fight started Monday night after the mother scolded her son for playing computer games.
  
  He says the student's younger sister said her brother had been playing violent Internet games for the past two to three years.
  
  South Korea estimates some 2 million people are Internet addicts. The country is considered one of the world's most technologically wired, with more than 90 percent of homes having broadband Internet access.

  You see to strangle someone would take a very large burst of contained anger
  doesn't make sense for him to snap from only video games

  Doubt it is just video games, must have been the pressure his mother gave him over a very long time combined with his inability to handle such pressure.

  Yahoo - Assumes gaming was the problem, based on police investigation and the younger sister's comments.
  You - Assume a long 3 hour rant involving a variety of unrelated things, based on nothing. Also assume that the kid wasn't actually severely addicted.
  
  Whether or not the media skewed the story for attention, I fail to see the logic behind this.
  
  Also, interests and social life can be tied to gaming.

  Strangling someone is not a quick kill, especially with someone as personal as your mother.
  There has to be something bigger than this.
  The younger sister wouldn't know, the police wouldn't know.
  Only the mother and the boy would know
  and they're both dead.

  How exactly can you know this? You're just making assumptions. You don't know anything about them at all, aside from what little information is given in the article.
  
  Saying that strangling is hard, especially against you mother, is yet another assumption.
  In my debate class we were talking about abortion, and somebody pulled out the "maternal instincts" card saying that a girl/woman will become attached to the life inside of her. Another girl spoke up and said something along the lines of "uh, no. I made a mistake a few years back and I wasn't ready to have a kid. I didn't feel anything for it, and I had it aborted. Don't just say people will have certain feelings when you haven't been in the situation, because I have."
  Not everybody likes their mother. Some hate their mothers, especially if all they do is harass you. Not much hesitation there.
  
  Plus, I don't see why you're ruling out the little sister as a credible source. If I hear my parents yelling at my older brother, I can guess one or two things that it's about before hearing any of the words clearly. It's pretty much always about the same things.

  I think it is safe to assume the mother did give something similar to a three hour rant, involving games and other things, like how much of a failure of life he was.

  i dunno about all this assumption stuff. i mean you could say that it was a lot more stressing on him and the argument had a lot more to it than they bothered to mention, but have you ever actually studied things like this that happen? it could've been a number of things. some people have anger issues, and some people have anger issues. people have done some really, really crazy things in the heat of the moment and sometimes people (murderers) look back on them and they can't even connect themselves to the occasion that it happened. it's just beyond them-- this could very well be that on top of all your other suggestions.
  
  i listen to heartbreaking police calls in my free time (i don't know, after being holed up in my room day to day i like to give myself a bit of a reality shock, i know i'm nuts) and i distinctly remember one boy calling in to report that he stabbed his brother over an argument that started because of his brother's loud music.
  
  his brother died because of it, but the boy was crying like a baby when he called. people do really stupid things in the heat of the moment, ESPECIALLY young children who don't give themselves time to think better, and the article doesn't even mention if anyone knew that the hanging was done out of remorse or fear of getting caught. or even both.
  
  either way we'll never know, but it always hurts to read that something like this had to happen. that poor girl must be devastated.

  Two possible reasons the boy killed himself, in my opinion: He was afraid of getting caught, or he was genuinely sorry for what he did, or both, as Coy said.
  
  From all the stories I hear, Asian parents can get to be strict and horrible to a point where all the child wants is to escape. Maybe it was one of those situations, and finally, the kid couldn't take it anymore. Did he hate his mother? Possibly, but he understood what he did and whatever his thought process was, we end up here.

  Pretty true... You can't yell at someone for playing too much games; it's just not effective.
  It's like saying poison's bad for you.... WHY?!
  The mom probably added that he's a student and he has to study for college and etc... and that went on to his life story.
  
  Honestly, I think the internet in South Korea is amazing, but it has led to some of the most idiotic incidents like this one.
  Hey, i'm a 17 year old game addict living in Northern Virginia, but you won't see me even hitting my parents about them yelling at me for being an addict. In my opinion, it's the "REALLY OBSESSED" people who would do things like this in a state of rage and go, "omg, what have I done?!" and then kill himself

  As a Korean myself, I would like to support this statement =/
  As a Senior in High school, I need to prepare for college, but the last thing I need is parents yelling at me to finish applications.
  I KNOW THAT I NEED TO FINISH IT! NO ONE NEEDS TO TELL ME! I'm 17 for god's sake... I'm not irresponsible enough to just play around all the time; I have my own pace that I want to finish these tasks at.

  I can feel for this child. I really can.
  
  Many children are pressued into suicide, and killing their mothers isn't horribly far from something outrageous like that.
  
  I bet this 15 year old was going to a 12 hour school schedule followed by 4 hours of education centers and came home at 11PM to play Counter Strike for 30 minutes to get away from it all and his mother blew up on him for not studying to get into Seoul University.

  Haha. I'm 20, and I have these exact same feelings. The more they yell at me, the less I want to do. The way they talk to me is incredibly condescending and there's a point where I'm no longer able to tune them out. They say they'll stop when I prove myself and get my own place. Their house, their rules; I don't deserve respect from them for that reason, they say. Unfortunately, with the way tuition is now, I can't just ditch this place to get my own. I wouldn't last a month, probably. Too busy with school to get an actual job. Ah, well. "Someday" is what will keep me going. My parents probably aren't as bad as that guy's, but they can still resemble what he probably had to endure.
