I just got my hands on Vegas Pro, so I can finally start doing all the fun things I've planned on but could never do because Windows Movie Maker sucks ass.
So whats a good screen recording software?
I know Fraps is excellent for video games, but I want to be able to capture my desktop itself without losing a ton of quality, frame rates, or have a software watermark on the corner.
Hypercam is a piece of **** tbh, especially with his horrendous rendering, unless I'm using the settings all wrong.
It doesn't have to be "free" since I can just make it "free". *cough*
What are all the casters using nowadays?

I use Camtasia Studio 7 for anything if I ever want to record(Even video games it doesn't drop my FPS as much as fraps does)
Give it a try :P

I used ZD Soft Screen Recorder. It's been so long since I actually used it so I can't say about the quality though.

You can basically fix anything with watermark by just zooming in a smidge or adding your own watermark.
It depends on what you're using it for, too.
I just use CamStudio since it's easy, and if you adjust a few settings it's like it's not there. I use it for when I need to record hours and hours for drawing videos.
I used to use Hypercam for animation, but that's because I could easily trim out the watermark.

Both Camstudio and Hypercam has failed me greatly in quality.
I'm hearing the newer versions of Fraps records desktop as well. Does anyone have a copy?

Really? They turn out just fine for me.

Here is a direct comparison to what recordings look like on my computer.
ZDsoft. Excellent piece of software, but the sound needed a lot of adjustments. I might consider looking for the full version and using this. Had problems with sound and video desync, however.

Fraps is always the best for game recording. I have to record in half size to make sure my computer can keep up. Due to the lack of compression on the software's part, I had to rely on WMM, which usually KILLED the quality of the video. Since I have Vegas Pro now, I hope this isn't as much of a problem anymore. I want to get my hands on the newer versions so I can see what desktop recording is like, but I have a feeling that something like that will literally KILL my hard drive because of how large these files get.
Fraps raw avi:

Fraps butchered by WMM

Hypercam. This is about the absolute best I can get it to run. For some reason, the frame rate is really poor, or the compression ruins the video, and the color is always distorted. Not to mention how this video leaves behind burns.

I honestly couldn't get Camstudio to run well enough to make a video out of it.
I'll try Camtasia and the newer Fraps version and see if there are any other choices.
I really want to step up the quality of my videos and start uploading 720p. I do intend on doing quite a few things besides just recording gameplays.

Camtasia is excellent, it's what several of my LP subs on Youtube use for GBA videos.
Fraps works best for games...
WMM does screw up the video. Use Vegas, or if you're good with video, go with Premiere + After Effects. They're both costly though.
