So i'm gathering my defense set, and one of my friends tell me prot is more important?
Apparently, i thought that Prot reduces the damage already reduced from defense, and it reduces enemy crit chance.
But he's saying that if i had 90 defense and the enemy has 1k damage, i'd take 910. But if i did have 90 prot, i'd take 100 damage.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-
Layman's terms please D:

If you're fighting weak mobs that hit less than 100, 1 def will help more than 1 prot.
Once you get to stronger things that hit more than 100, 1 prot will be worth more than 1 def.

Def is a direct reduction of damage in integers.
1 defense reduces 1 damage. The advantage behind maxing out your defense is that you literally filter out most scrub attacks. If you are going for a defensive build, you should be a human paladin or a giant.
Shields are great for boosting your defense. You can get a total of 19 defense by having one equipped.
By maxing out defense, common enemies will never hurt you again. I tried a defense build and it let me auto battle my way through Rabbie like it was a joke. Skeletons would do only 1 damage on me, unless it was a crit or I got hit by a counter.
Protection on the other hand is great for surviving heavy attacks. The stronger the enemy's attack, the more it damage you're reducing. Also, protection offers 2% critical hit reduction for every 1% protection you have.
So enemies that have a 20% crit rate would never land a crit on you if you have 10% protection.
I prefer defense. Some prefer protection.
Its easy to get well over 50 defense with humans. More if you're activating certain skills or conditions.
Its easy to have like 20 protection as a giant. Its possible to get 100% protection when using tranformation and wind guard, reducing EVERY attack to 1 damage.

I'm not planning on getting hit at all, and succeeding at it.
How about for a duel set? reccommend protection?

I'm not sure.
I know defense is applied BEFORE the pvp damage reduction, so I don't think it matters too much. I'm inclined to say protection would be more useful in pvp.
I DO know that shields are bugged and the hidden 15 damage reduction you get from equipping it is applied AFTER the pvp damage reduction, making it quite awesome.

Yes, atm I have a half completed defense set and i notice the big difference, but have never tried prot set.
I'll see if i can get one

Defense is direct subtraction of damage you receive. Protection is percentage reduction (ie 5% Protection reduces dmg by 5%). So it's why the common knowledge is that Defense is better than Protection against damage that is 100 or lower.
But anything that does over 100 dmg per hit is better off trying to avoid than tanking, in my opinion. So Protection is more worthwhile as an anti-Critical rate stat. Not a lot of monsters have high Critical rate, so usually 10-15% Protection is fine (which is doable with max Protection upgrade path with 6/3 Heavy Armor and a few +1 or +2 Protection equipment).
Still, 10-15% Protection isn't enough for PvP (discounting shield), figuring that most PvPers have around 45-90% Critical.

but with barrier master title, upgraded dustin and protection enchants it'll be good in pvp?

This thread explains why it is better to have prot over def. Also, don't want to sound mean but try using the search function next time, so we don't have too many threads on the same topic.

If you can get 30-40% Protection without transforming, that's possibly more of a tide-turner than Defense in most non-Ranged duels.
Shield still takes up a slot that could be used for dual-wielding or bows.
