Great Wall of Text
It seems that people say that Sword Lanns have better avoidability rates and are for solo play, while Spear Lanns are more vulnerable and therefore are better in party play when they aren't targeted as much.
Also, people generalize that Spear Lanns much better at attacking large mobs, and they seem to be balanced at bosses. Alternatively, people say that swords complete fail at bosses compared to spears or vice versa.
Most of this comes from the citation of Fury Infusion/Liberate and Hurricane 3960 on the spears part, while on the swords part, Double Crescent (+Gliding Fury).
tl;dr question time
How does spamming 3960 on a single boss compare to DC + Gliding Fury? Fury Infusion included.
How much more OP are spear lanns in combat against groups of normal mobs?
Does the vulnerability of spear lanns get more problematic in future episodes? It doesn't even seem to matter now...or if it does point that out.
Now I need to make a decision before I waste too much AP -_-:XD:

Spear Lanns are really good DPS now if you have high rank Fury, but Sword Lanns can be just as good if played right.

Well, 3960 obviously will do more damage, but is harder to pull off on quicker bosses that'll kill you in a few hits. Sword can DC then run away and wait for another opening, and basically take no damage but still put in some of his own.

I wouldn't know because I haven't played MH, but from what most people say(/what I hear), the difference in evasiveness between Sword and Spear is so big that a lot of people prefer Sword for the quicker bosses.

Thousand Needles is as good as 3960 if you do it right :U

As a sword lann
Dps goes to spear lann on bosses since they can spin and evade most the bosses for the current boats expect maybe blood prince but who spins into a fireball seriously? They attack faster then sword lann and also get their agi bonus of 1% dmg every 40 agi per hit 1 double cresent is worth 2 3960 hits as by the charts on this fourm
So in dps their speed and agility bonus give spear lanns a higher dps on bosses and mob groups
Vs mobs is not that different if the sword lann ranks thousand needle as they get their shock wave
Basicly swords can handle mobs just as well but spears just smash em faster
You dont see it in the current boats but id bet with the higher boats and pvp the inv frames of slip dash become useful
Take polar bear with his huge paw. A sword lann with the frames might get spared and just barley make it out
A spear lann with his roll maybe not

tl:dr right now it goes to spear lanns but with future bosses swords might over take for dodge prowess

Spamming transformation doesn't really show the soloability, it just shows the high damage.
The boss was locked in a position where it wasn't able to attack. I'd like to see it against a more predictable but heavy hitting boss, like Macha/Hard White Tyrant. Predictable, but still hard to outmaneuver if done incorrectly.

Of course when spear Lanns go DK they become spinning death whirlwinds. But obviously that doesn't happen every battle.
I bet that can take down a tank in the present day o_O

The video I posted isn't valid for the simple reasons that the Lann is severly over leveled and the spider AI is dumb.

The real place spear lanns shine is in their crit chance. They have much more crits, and thus, much more gliding fury. However, a fully charged thousand needle, plus the extra hit, can come up just a slightly short of a full 3690. The difference is practically negligible. The downside for swords is that it's an all or nothing type thing, whereas spears can do partial 3690.
Proper use of slip dash makes some lanns seem like god, but the crit chance on DC isn't amazing, it's just good, not giving many opportunities for gliding fury.
Really, the main reason someone would want to go spear is Gliding fury. A spear lann can do it every combo, or at at least every other combo, pushing their average dps way out of bounds.
That said, I prefer swords. Why? Wm fury has a lot to do with it, slip dash has a lot to do with it, and they generally have better evasiveness. Also, consider evasiveness at higher levels when slip dash can be ranked to 6.

In simple terms:
Sword: Tactical evasiveness, less DPS, more survivability.
Spear: LEEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY
