Okay I looked to see if there is another guide out there somewhere but I couldn't find any, but if I missed one.. DON'T KILL ME PL0X.
But Hannaaaaaa fishing is sooo boringgg!
Everything you get is junk and it's a total waste of time right?
Wrong! Well kinda.
Fishing is useful for many things, my personal favorite... EGO FOODZ OMNOMNOM.
Some items you can only find fishing! Such as mystic pearls that are needed in making lifedrain crystals.
Note: except for mystic pearls, most of 'fishable only' items are extremely hard to find.
Okay lets start off with obtaining the skill, to do this you will need :
2900 gold to buy a fishing rod (2000g)
[Image: http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/91/fishingrod.png]
and a bait tin. (900g)
[Image: http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/4787/baitcan.gif]
Here are some fabulous NPCs that sell these items :
Malcolm - Tir Chonaill
Galvin - Emain Macha
Lorraine - Dugald Residential Town
Elain - Sen Mag Residential Town
Ailbhis - Abb Neagh Residential Town
Shenon - Port of Ceann
Effie - Qilla Base Camp
Petra- Fishing Boat
Myrddin - Rano Beach
Granites - Filia
Zeder - Vales
Pierrick - Taillteann
Ilsa -Tara
Equip both the fishing rod and the bait tin (Fishing rod in left hand bait tin in right)
And you should gain knowledge about the skill, and have it at novice rank.
Okay what now?
Good question! Now we look for a place to fish, depending what you're looking for you will fish in different locations.
(items, fish, quest scrolls)
Here are some fishing locations I oh-so-nicely stole for wiki.
Fishing locations:
* Tir Chonaill
* Emain Macha
* Ceo Island
* Outside of Sen Mag Castle
* Port of Ceann
* Fishing Boat
* Reus River (Ice Fishing)
* Lake Neagh
* Lakes in the housing zones.
Places you can't fish:
* The beach outside Qilla Base Camp
* The ship trip between Port Ceann and Qilla Base Camp
* Beach South of Connous
* Tir Na Nog
* Beach North of Cor
* Beach Northeast of Pera Volcano
* Shadow Realm
* The Lake in Filia
How to fish :
When you get a 'bite'
a small window will pop up
[Image: http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3471/asdasdasdsa.png]
You now have two options to choose from, you can either press catch and go to manual fishing.
(If you have a steady hand, this should be great for you)
or you can let the timer run out and go to autofishing, which at random will either catch your fish/item or knock you back and give you a big headache.
In my personal opinion the best way to fish is when you plan on being afk for a while, it will go to autofishing, so when you come back (depending on how long you were gone) you should have a good amount of random junk in your inventory and scattered all around you.
Note : when you inventory fills up while fishing the items that are caught are dropped on the ground, but don't worry depending on how expensive the item is it wont disappear for a long time and no one will be able to pick up your items unless you pick them up and drop them.
Manual fishing :
This may require a lot of practice to get it right, but if done correctly you will be guaranteed your fish/item.
Once you get a 'bite' you will then click 'catch'
A nifty little minigame should then pop up, but what do you do?!

Your object is to keep the fish in the little box, the best way to do this is to go along the bottom and sometimes top line of the square and just tug in the opposite direction the fish is moving.

Not frequently asked questions that I feel people may be wondering somewhere :
Q: Wait, so what items can I catch?
A: Here's a list of items that can be caught in specific locations.
Fished Items - Mabinogi World Wiki
Q: OMG I CAN DO THE FREAKING MINIGAME ITS TOO HARD HALP PL0X
A: You have to have a steady hand, if you really want to get the hang of it keep practicing. I found it helpful to increase the sensitivity in my mouse.
Q: I caught a quest scroll... I can buy the same one from Duncan for 30 gold D:<. What's the difference?
A: The ones you catch while fishing have a higher reward value than the ones in the store.
Q: OMG I CAUGHT THIS THING ON THE FISHING BOAT
[Image: http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/9250/asdsadasdsasads.png]
IF I OPEN IT WILL A BIG FAT UGLY MONSTER COME OUT AND EAT ME?!?!?!1?! I'M SCARED!
A: No, a big fat ugly monster will not come out and eat you. These chests do spawn monsters but the monsters will not attack unless you attack first. So they wont aggro you if you open the chest and don't feel like killing them.
Q: Wait.. so then what's in that chest?
A: Normally an enchant or a blacksmith's manual, Thanks Laconicus for telling me that wiki had a list. c;
Blacksmith manuals:
* Grace Gauntlets
* Grace Greaves
* Grace Helmet
* Kirsten Leather Boots
* Kirsten Leather Gauntlets
* Norman Warrior Helmet
Enchant Scrolls:
* Abysmal
* Apatite
* Calcite
* Diamond
* Flourite
* Grace
* Norman
* Orthoclase
* Plaster
* Quartz
* Talcum
* Topaz
Sewing Patterns:
* Kirsten Leather Armor
* Norman Warrior Armor
* Graceful Plate Armor
Q: Okay then... what monsters are inside?!
A: Stone Bison/Spiders/Zombies/Hounds/Imps
They have lower hp than the normal ones and wont attack unless you attack first. (they wont aggro)

Q: Where's the best place to fish for items?
A: For items? The Fishing Boat but check here to see if there is a certain item you're looking for and the exact place it can be caught.
Fished Items - Mabinogi World Wiki
Q: How do I get there?!
A: You go up through up from Quilla through Kaypi Canyon Across Muyu Desert down (South) in Karu Forest and sound eventually get to a beach with an NPC named Myrddin. That's where you will click 'board ship' and view a cutscene to get on.
[Image: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7521/dsadsadsadass.png]
Q: HEY! HE WONT LET ME ON! D:<
A: You need to be wearing the 'Aspiring Sailor' title. You can get it by riding the boat from Quilla to Port Ceann 10 times. If you don't want to spend the time and/or gold riding the boat you can eithe rget a friend with the title and a mount to let you on, or wait until someone with a mount comes a long, get on your knees and beg (Don't forget to poke out that lip, and cry if needed).
Q: What bonus from ranking it do I get.
A: Well here's a chart I got from wiki that has to do with ranking.

If I missed anything or anything is invalid/outdated, let me know.
AND GRAMMAR NATZIS DON'T HURT ME.
With the quest, item, and fishing portions, if all you're interested in is being able to rank to the next level, then what you need to do is complete half of the quest requirements (for any rank that has 120 possible training points; it's divided into 3'rds) and that will let you finish the rank at the fishing boat. As far as I've seen, Tir appears to be optimal for the quests and items, although you do get more fish than anything else there. Port Ceann also seems to give good amounts of quests, as do a couple other place.
^for a bit of clarification for quest scrolls.
and from personal experiance
Quest scrolls - mainly in Ceann and Tir
Items - fishing boat
Fish - Lake Neagh (outside of tailltean) and emain
Also : You can fish up a lot of shrimp in Port Ceann
though I'm not sure if it qualifies as fish or items.
