You could always get a pet from a nearby humane society or animal rescue place. You'd be able to pick a trained, adult cat and also take care of a poor animal that has experienced hardship in it's life.

That's what we've done with 3 of the 4 dogs we've had. Though, one of them was just a total stray, not even in a shelter, so we just took him.
It really is the best thing to, that way you don't have to have another animal born that may end up being given away or whatever.

My mom is yelling at me that I can't get an effing cat over the age of 3 months. Thats like impossible to find.
@edit: I looked at those shelters websites no cats at/under the age of 3 months.

Most shelters don't really have kittens that young, because people like kittens. They tend to not like cats so much.
I found that the friendliest cat I've ever owned, he acts more like a dog really, has been a black male cat. Though he's probably the worst kind you can get for allergies (dandruff and all that). o_o Picking a kitten from Petsmart would be the best, they tend to pick up the cats from shelters and don't really breed their own.. at least, that's what the ones here do. I know they've also stocked up a lot on the kittens for Christmas, so you might find them there now.

If you get a cat, get a kitten. You can raise them that way and it's a lot less stressful to them.
I tried to adopt a full grown cat once but it'd always just stay hidden in the deepest darkest corner it could find and it lost... A LOT... of hair. I can't stand hair.
And anyways, get a kitten. It'll be better for the cat psychologically.
Well, I guess you could get a sphinx. Those don't even have hair (like Dr. Evil's cat from Austin Powers).
