Any tips on Goliath? I can't see the tendon cause my graphic's not set high enough. But I know it's its right leg.

What's the best time to spear?

It's really out in the open. Pretty much any time, even directly after a knockdown, which is usually a no no for breaks.
If you're soloing, he does a move where he turns around to kick, and winds up showing off his sexy legs.

Based on this discussion, I take it that, as a staff Evie, I'm pretty much screwed when it comes to break off?
What's the mechanic behind break offs? Do you have to crit with whatever you hit with? Or are you supposed to do a certain amount of damage to that specific body part overall / in one hit to get it to break off? If I (somehow) managed to fireball the specific body part for the breakoff, would that work?
I'm just really fuzzy on the whole break-off thing, aside from what it results in. And being a staffie, that doesn't help either. :(
Thanks for any info :)

Staffy can use Firebolt, Eagle Talon, Magic Fire Mine, Magic Arrow, and Blind Arrow to break things off.

Oh. So the spells work?
Do you know if break off is based on damage dealt in one hit, damage dealt overall, critical hit?

You just have to get lucky and hit the exact breaking point. This tends to be more difficulty with large area-based skills since you'll have a higher chance of hitting an unwanted spot.

It only works if you don't hit other spots at the same time? So pinpoint skills are better for it then (Magic Arrow, although you can't aim it; Eagle Talon; Spear).
Good to know, thanks :D

D< Getting the Polar Bears eye off with Firebolt is freakin' hard! You can actually do it though. Personally, as a Staffy, I find that Blind Arrow works the best for break offs, followed by Fire mines. I've only managed to hit the Chief Gnoll hat off with Magic Arrow, the other times I just use other spells because they have a higher percent of actually hitting the spot. ^^;

In my opinion, the only attack worth using for break-offs other than spears is counter.
Other attacks aren't reliable enough for getting break-offs consistently.
Scythes are lucky because wisp for some reason targets break-off locations 2/5th of the time and our attacks are so broad that they have a high chance to get the rest of it. Nowhere near as reliable as counter attacks however.
If you're trying to get a break-off, and you're not a fiona, I'd say just use spears. In fact, I'd say to use spears even if you were a fiona.

I'd say it depends on where the break-off is. Spears are always the most reliable. Next I'd have to say is Sprint Smash if the break off is around character height. If the break off is in the direct vicinity of a counterable attack, such as the blade arm on Blood Prince or the Fleeing Gnoll King's Mask, then Counterattack is really useful. Shield Bash is nice also if it follows the same rules as the sprint smash.

o_o; For the Kobold Chief, I can get the Shield off 100% of the time, very easily, with Fire Mines. Blind Arrow is just a plus. But for things like Goliath's Tendon and the masks.. Yeah, spears are better. D: I think the spells should actually only be used for the "difficult" break offs if you're out of spears. lol.

Isn't that a little high for Counter Attack?

His head goes down when he attacks, so you can get a clear shot with a counter attack.
