I have 97% crit with my bow and I'm only hitting crits half the time to bears and foxes..

The max chance you have to crit on any monster is just 30%. Normally, you only need 30% for skills such as windmill, adv magic, crash shot, and others that ignore protection for calculating crit. Skills that don't ignore protection, such as Smash and Magnum, need the extra crit. Every 1% protection lowers the chance you have to do a critical hit by 2%. With the critical rate that you have, you have enough to have the max chance to crit a monster with 33% protection. It works like this: You find the protection a monster has and multiply it by 2, then add 30 too it. Example: A Hardmode Shadow Lancer has 35% protection. You multiply 35 by 2 or just add 35 again too it, then add 30. That means to have a 1% chance to crit it you'll need 71% crit and to have the max 30% chance, you need 100% crit. With the crit you have, you could have a 27% chance to land a critical hit. Hope this wasn't too confusing.

Every Critical percentage after that does not count. However, keep in mind that Protection blocks Critical rate at a 1:2 ratio. 1% Protection blocks 2% Critical. Thus, one usually gains a lot of Critical to maintain a good Critical rate versus high Protection targets.
Then there are skills that ignore Protection to calculate Critical rate. Usually AoE skills.
