I've been reading the guides for refining and they basically say buy your ores, well I'm poor on Alexina
:awesome:
So I have to mine my own ores which I don't have a problem with. Question is should I pick up metallurgy instead? And any other tips I should know? Since I never touched a lifeskill in any MMO before.

Metallurgy is your friend. It's much easier to get things other than iron and mythril, and the ore fragments take up less space than regular ores. There's also the added benefit of finding gems, which you can ego feed or sell for a decent price.
Try to save as much gold and silver as possible (ingots, too).

metallurgy is better because it lets you have more ores in your inventory. buying the ores is actually pretty cheap though(imo)

i made it to rank 3 past 50% without buying anything. i used my assist elf to get metallurgy 6 and prod mast 1. works pretty well. :3
i only bought some silver ingots (because silver ores are expensive and hard to come by) and a little bit of gold ingots. i bought some mythril and gold ores~ after getting all my fails for rank 2, i just metallurgize the rest, and take it nice and slow. now there is no rush because all the fails are done. i can now rank prod mast to help boost my success rate, and i'm metallurgizing the remainder. im at 95.1% for rank 2 :D
i have spent about 600k<x<700k altogether on refine to my recollection, and they were all from rank 3 and 2.

I've been using my Tanker title for failures since that's the only -dex title I have. Even though my base dex is like 29; and The Reborn title for successes since thats also the highest +dex title. Also been saving every ore that drops just in case. So I guess 'm doing alright :3
Whats the best beach for metallurgy-ing?

Metallurgy Rank 9, go go go rite now. Only rank it past 9 after you're done with Refine as it gives dex R9+.
When you need fails use old furnaces at Fillia/Vales. If you need successes use Bangor.
Also, Cor beach rains a lot so I suggest there.

A beach that isn't populated with people, really. Ore chances are the same for each beach, it's just the different colored sands at night and the jewels you can get there that changes.

Ahh ok. I'll go take a look at Filia since that's closer to furnaces.
Thanks for the help~

I personally advise against using a metallurgy mule with production mastery. Metallurgy adds stamina and DEX, which can only be to your character's benefit, and looking for ores on your main account removes the hassle of transferring your finds. The success rate isn't all too bad with r6 metallurgy and a letter rank of PM, anyway. And you only get 4 DEX from capping metallurgy, which shouldn't have too much effect on your failure rate but will help you out in the long run when you start looking towards other sources of DEX.
Don't forget you can eat food to lower your DEX, as well. Vales Fire and BnR are your best bets.

I didn't plan on using a mule :3 but thanks for the heads up ^^
Now to go read up on metallurgy....

uhh... i disagree. metallurgy isn't that great anyways, statwise. you'll want to get rank 6 metallurgy and rank 1 prod mast on a side char on your account. i think metallurgy is a waste of ap for a main char. you'll get PLENTY of extra stam when u get rank 1 prod mast after your rank 2 refine fails. prod mast also gives you dex, so you'll want that too. you should also totally rank up prod mast after all your fails for rank 2. helps a lot yo.
getting "experienced death" is easy to get. it minuses 30 dex, and all u gotta do is get hit once by a giant sand worm.
you should also get the mine expert title, which adds 20 dex. i had a thread on how to get that title, lemme look it up real quick. ah here it is:
how to get mine expert title

Your point...? Metallurgy may not add a whole lot of DEX compared to other life skills, but it's still there, and anyone who has any intention of maximizing their ranged damage in the future is going to want every last bit of DEX from skills they can get their hands on. The skill is easy enough to train compared to other skills that give DEX, especially if you work on it alongside refining, and that extra boost will bring you that much closer to reaching the minimum DEX needed to use low-balance weapons. Also, if you're going to rank it to increase your ore-gathering efficiency, why waste time getting it on a whole other character that isn't even going to serve any purpose beyond being a regular mule once you're done with refining when you could just rank it on the character you actually play? Because, you know, your main character can actually put the bonus stats to use.

Ok so rank metallurgy to 9 pre r2 refine? Or wait off on metallurgy to save me some AP? And should I even bother ranking Prod Mast now? It's only at novice atm

Criticalxhit wrote on 2010-05-01 04:59
@brad - Try to hold off ranking prod mastery until you're done ranking refine
Another reason people use alts to do metallurgy is that elves (giants too) are faster than humans, which makes collecting fragments more efficient

R9 metallurgy would help save you a lot of time and trouble since there is a chance of getting two fragments at one spot.
Right now, I'm r3 refine and I haven't and am not planning on spending a single dime on ores. It slows down in the middle but picks up quickly in the later ranks if you've been storing all your ingots. I did r5 to r3 all in a day.
Personally, I only go to Irai Falls since the chances of other people being there are considerably lowered when compared to other shores.
