Does break off eat tokens?

  You should get the credit the moment you break off the object, You could try it, go to the boss, break off the item, quit the mission, relog and check if the count went up.

  You only get any BP rewards at the end of the mission after you hit the reward screen.
  If you've ever looked at a break off you'd notice it's a black drop with a question mark floating over it.
  
  This break off item is only available for pickup after beating the boss.
  Break off rewards are stated as "Obtain ______ (break off)" meaning you have to pick up the item, not just knock it off.

  So in short, if you want the item or BP reward you will have to use up tokens.

  You get the credit for the title as soon as you break off the item, whether or not you finish the mission. I noticed this when I was doing Princely Blade Breaker. As soon as I broke his arm the 50th time, I immediately got the title, even though I hadn't killed him yet. Same thing happened for Sturdy.

  Yeah, you'll get the count towards the title, but you won't be able to pick up the item itself, since it's a [?] ball before the boss actually dies.
