Well, all the payments are optional to enhance the Mabinogi experience. It is by no means hidden. The cost of them is labeled pretty well in cash shop.
I dungeon, and don't use Naos anymore. I just use massive amount of Holy Waters I bought or farmed myself.

I don't even know what holy water is; I've never used it. :/
I kinda lied, though - I do dungeon, but only when I can find people far more powerful than I am, so when things get tough, I can sit back and watch. That's about the only time I'll ever do anything, though.
And also, as a side note... in my opinion, as long as there is an option to pay for something that gives you any form of advantage over those who don't pay, it's a P2P. Loosely used, of course, but I'd still consider it to be one.

Now? I can keep up fine without services. Though to really "keep up in the game" money-wise, you still probably will want service.
I can agree with kitaek on this one
At least free beginner service. We should all feel very lucky, because are no free beginner service on certain servers. CN and NA has it for sure, but the last time I went to play TW (few weeks back) there wasn't at all. Some sort of culture shock I had there when there was no sharp mind, realised how many people are selling items by party instead and housing had a number of people with long number names (probably bots).
In CN, people still do sell items by party over here but they usually only sell the big items that are valued above shop license limit.
With this "free" beginner service, at least people without service can keep up.
I agree that Mabi is a hidden P2P. It's very hard to keep up without pets. Pets are the bare minimum for the game, otherwise you'll be wasting a lot of time.

Same for me. May as well train in TNN and act like nao doesn't exist.
I never got to experience the "free trial" aspect of it since I was well past level 30 total when they added that. But that's basically what it is, a trap.

/wait's for Kazuni.

From what I've heard, Mabinogi definetly was P2P. Paying to have a storyline, ego, Nao, and most of all Rebirths! I wouldn't be playing if I had started at that time. However, now, you can get along fine with just a pet, and a beginner personal shop if you need it. If you really need NX, but don't want to buy it, there's even Free NX offers :P

Yes it's a trap and always will be...they should have stated the warning from level 10....
There's someone who's playing on my server...I forgot to tell him about the beginner service expiring and so he left the ghost halloween robe I gave to him and some sword stuck on the tabs that turned red. I just gave him another one since I have plenty of ghost halloween robes lying around.

No pets = Hell = No fun = Quit.
It's a P2P IMO.

Mabinogi was a hidden p2p game since you had to pay to experience the game fully. Now that almost everything is free outside of the cash cow "events"/items Nexon throws in and pets its more f2p then p2p.

It's not pay-to-login, at least, like most p2p services are, so I'm kinda fine with it set up how it is.
-
Drifter wrote on 2010-05-02 03:21
Same here.
since I can login and do stuff without having to play to login, i'd say its f2p
but as for what was said earlier...
yeah it used to be a hidden p2p just because with no rebirthing the game kinda ended at level 50

Eh, Mabinogi needs to split the difference between payers and non-payers in terms of leveling time. As it stands, 40 dollars a month gets you 3 times the levels as someone who doesn't pay.

It used to be. Not so much anymore.
Back when it first started you used to only be allowed to play 2 hours a day without having any of the three basic services bought.
