I'm not really a fan of going hybrid at lower levels, and I don't think I've ever had this problem either.
The problem with hybrid at lower levels is you'll have mediocre ranks in different sections which translates to
bad damage and making it harder to gain levels. I think it's important to specialize in something and once that tab is done branch off into other areas.
The nice thing about Mabinogi is the whole being able to do whatever you want, but I think people should get their basics done too or else it will be a lot harder on them later on.

I have a huge problem with that.
r1 CM r1 smash r3 crit r3 wm r6 Def rB TH rF thunder r6 MM r8 prod mastery rA golem rC AM.
As you can see my skills are horribly unbalanced.
I'm still 90% melee though with only 67 int.

Hybridizing is ok as long as you remember to put more focus on one (maybe two) sets of skills that compliment a certain play-style (melee, range, magic, alchemy).

Well I decided I'm going to do what I wanted to do for ages, get R1 Thunder. I just didn't want to leave Alchemy (was working on Golem before this...), at least I achieved R9 Alchemy Mastery, and R1 Flame/Water (and R3 Barrier). Maybe someday I'll...somehow finish Refine (with R1 Prod Mastery :T_T:)
@abc the 2nd part is exactly what I'm worried about, my total is around 1.1k and my skills are everywhere D=

I think you should get working on refine soon @_@ even if its not right away (or start saving up ores/money for it), maybe try to find a friend whose doing metallurgy and ask them to let you refine the ores. Or the next time a double rainbow comes around abuse that.

Unfortunately, I planned my build and it won't work unless I stick to that (combat) skill tab. After I get further I'll get lightning and ice to r5, r9. Then I'd like to work on Alchemy.

i think you should be strong in one area and then branch out to other areas. when i say strong i mean like... have rank 1 in 90% of the skills in the tab. complimentary skills are good to rank to 1 as well, as i have done, but i think it's important to have a strong/main point of attack.
depending on what type of character you are, you should focus on ranking the skills that boosts the stat that helps your class the most: for example, warriors need high str and dex, etc.

I would....but like I said, I have R1 Prod D=. I could do surveys for prod fail potions...but that would be a lot of NX for R8 to R1 Refine.

It's really easy for me to diverge from the skills that I originally wanted to rank.
After G13 came out, I was going to rank sword mastery first thing.
But then I saw how well crash shot did rafting, so now I'm ranking that.
And just today I saw how well hailstorm does in certain places, so I want to rank THAT too.
And then I thought about how I'd need more int and mana to make hailstorm useful, leading me to consider ranking up firebolt, icebolt, magic mastery...
I've put off on carpentry and weaving for a while now.
Basically, I stray away from ranking the skills I want to because I see something that shows me how certain skills are awesome in things I frequently do.

If it doesn't help me slide a piece of steel into a fomor then I probably didn't touch it.
Rank 1 Windmill
Rank 1 Critical
Rank 5 Combat Mastery
Rank 5 Smash
Rank 5 Icebolt
Rank 9 Refine
Rank 9 Rest

This. Theres NX cards in Darwin so there will have to be NX cards everywhere else.

I already know there are NX cards at my nearest EB, I'd rather spend it on rebirths or pets (usually limited pets). I'll probably do surveys for the NX if I ever do decide to rank Refine.
