I'm currently trying to work out how to avoid every boss attack in the game, and this particular attack has me a bit stumped.
If you're solo I think you can just keep sprinting towards his back, but I always get hit about 50% of the time.
It's particularly bad in a group or when your back is to a wall, because that doesn't leave enough time to run away with a Lann. Of course on Fiona it's a non-issue with heavy stander.

Can't you just run and roll/slip dash away as Lann?
If you're really pro it's possible to get behind him which gives you a lot more time to punish.

You have to recognize his roar and the shaking he does before charging his attack. Honestly you just have to run and get out of that area of attack unless you can slip dash to avoid it.

When he roars, I start running... Usually it is enough time.

If you're really daring, when he roars, run towards him and wait till he raises the hammer over his head, then sprint diagonally towards him till you get behind him. But <_< your timing has to be perfect or else you get slammed xD

The key is really watching for his roar and making sure you have a clear exit strategy. Chances are if you’ve backed yourself into a corner and are forced to run through him to get away then you’re probably going to get hit. Once he begins to roar, start sprinting!

Yeah, dodging it in itself isn't really hard.
General spacing throughout the battle is more tough because of how retarded the battlefield is shaped. Don't trap yourself. Everwhite follows you, not the other way around - you have the power to define where you fight. Make sure you choose an area where you have escape options.
