1. Introduction to Metallurgy
A skill to sift for ores and gemstones in the sand. Has been used by people as an alternative to mining.
Metallurgy is estimated to arrive at G7, which means at the time of writing (just started on guide) it is not out on NA server yet.
2. Metallurgy Versus Mining
The reason why I'm putting this up after the introduction is because people may be curious to know if metallurgy is the best option for them to go in order to train up refining.
This is a comparison list which I've translated from the chinese wiki.

(T_T ouch list resized...just click and check it out if you're interested)
Pickaxes and the sieves can both be repaired at weapon stores. For the same amount of points, it costs more to repair a sieve. It takes about 1300 gold to repair a 5 durability sieve at 95% success, while you need just 345 gold to repair 5 points on a pickaxe at 95% success. Although the chinese wiki list says durability drops more on a pickaxe, I've tested both out and seems that durability drops at the same rate for a 17-year old character. (Goes to show that sometimes wiki information is not perfect.)
The ores from metallurgy and mining have a size difference. Both can be used for refining (5 ores at a time), but you cannot mix and match the different ores for refining.
If you fail during mining, there is no ore wastage. If you fail after using metallurgy, the sparkling area will disappear and you will get junk ore (called fragments of strange ore).
Strange ore has a special use in G9:
Anyway, strange ore fragments have one known use: As an ingredient in making ice mines via synthesis. The recipe calls for 5 strange ore fragments, 5 earth crystals, and one ice spear crystal.
Failures reduce durability for both sieves and pickaxes.
Average prices for ores have been affected by metallurgy on servers having metallurgy and might be affected when it comes out to NA. On the server that I play at, average price for gold has dropped down to 5000-6000 gold for a stack of 10 ores. Mithril goes for 6000-7000 gold for a stack of 10 ores. People do not usually sell the big ores from mining nowadays due to the space constraints of store. Why bother putting up a big stack of ore for sale when you can put 4 times more with the smaller stack? (Sadly, silver is mostly unaffected, averaging 25,000 gold per stack of 10 and becomes the most expensive ore in the marketplace.)
Rain affects the amount of gathering areas for metallurgy, and also helps increase production rate. Alban Eiler (Monday server time) also helps to increase production rates.
In addition to ores from metallurgy, you can also obtain precious gems, which are an uncommon occurence. I get about 1-2 of these per sieve's 5 durability on average. Precious gems can be given to NPC as presents or can be spirit weapon food. Bigger gems (>3cm and >5cm as a rule of thumb) can go into collection books which can be used to obtain prizes when completed. The gems as spirit weapon food are good, and at least they are free!
However, the downside to Metallurgy is the AP cost.
AP to rank 9 (possibility of sieving up to 2 ores in one use of skill) is 31 AP.
AP to rank 6, which is the current cap from G7 to G9, is 52 AP.
AP to rank 1, which is available on KR/JP servers (both are at G10), is 100 AP.
So you may want to consider if you have enough AP before you try and get this skill.
Otherwise, a good alternative is to use a mule account and train metallurgy while you leave the refining worries to your main account. This is good as metallurgy from rank 9 onwards give dex, which may interfere with refine training. (Higher dex = higher success rates. You need to fail a lot in refining, which means dex has to be kept low.)
3. Obtaining the skill
Equip a Sieve (2,000G). The Sieve can be bought from the General Stores in Qilia Base Camp/Vales/Filia, or the Bank/Relic Guy in Kor (G7).
An Exploration Level of at least 6 is required. Talk to Effie in Qilla Base Camp about skills and you will learn the Metallurgy skill.
Complete the quest and you are all set!
Practice rank is useable, but if you are intending to rank it up, rank F requires 3 AP.
You will also get a keyword on gems. (Details to be filled in later once I understand what gems are about from the wiki.)
4. Places where you can use Metallurgy at
The most common place to sieve for ore fragments to will be the Beach near Qilia Base Camp.
However, here is a map guide of the places where you can sieve at.

5. Using the skill
To use it successfully, just find a sparkling area on the beach sands or water areas.
Press the skill or your hotkey button and then press the ground to use it.
Collect all the ores you need and leave the strange fragments alone.
To train the skill, just use it! The skill trains up on its own.
The important rank is rank 9 whereby you start to be able to get up to 2 ores by chance per skill usage.
6. Training overview for Metallurgy (In the works)
Rank Practice
AP: 0
Equipping a sieve allows you to gain the knowledge of this skill.
In order to advance, equip a sieve and talk to Effie for the gold ore quest.
Rank F
AP: 3
Find Iron Ore. (20 times) Total: 100.00
Find a jewel. (1 time) Total: 50.00
Nothing much to say about this rank, just practice with sieving. You will want to have two or three sieves with you, since durability per sieve is low. (5 durability)
Make sure to bless the sieves with Holy Water of Lymilark. Don't know where to get Holy Water? Just do the nearby part-time job from Heulfryn (the healer) at Qilia Base Camp. It's easily done with Sheep wools all the time. Don't know how to start or what to do? Then read this awesome guide by Intex.
Just find iron ore 20 times, or if you are lucky to find one jewel, you just need to find iron ore 10 times.
Easily ranked.
You will definitely get other kinds of ores, so it might take a while to rank it.
Rank E
AP: 3
Find Iron Ore. (40 times) Total: 120.00
Find a jewel. (2 times) Total: 60.00
+1% success rate from Rank F might not seem to be a lot, but let's keep at it.
Now it's down to luck.
If you can manage to find 2 jewels, you just need to find iron ore 14 times.
Find 1 jewel, iron ore 24 times.
Find no jewel (pretty unlikely though), iron ore 34 times.
Rank D
AP: 4
Find Iron Ore. (200 times) Total: 200.00
Find a jewel. (2 times) Total: 50.00
D is for difficult.
However, this rank is easily done with jewels. Therefore, this is one rank where you will be hoping to get the jewel requirements filled.
Find 2 jewels, iron ore 50 times.
Find 1 jewel, iron ore 75 times.
Find no jewels, iron ore 100 times.
Rank C
AP: 4
Find Iron Ore. (50 times) Total: 40.00
Find Copper Ore. (10 times) Total: 50.00
Find a jewel. (3 times) Total: 60.00
Rank C is where you begin to find copper ores.
Copper ores are the next common ores after iron ores.
Mix and match the numbers up to clear this rank!
Rank B
AP: 5
Find Iron Ore. (70 times) Total: 42.00
Find Copper Ore. (20 times) Total: 60.00
Find a jewel. (4 times) Total: 60.00
Rank A
AP: 5
Find Iron Ore. (80 times) Total: 40.00
Find Copper Ore. (50 times) Total: 50.00
Find a jewel. (5 times) Total: 50.00
Rank 9
AP: 7
Here's when stamina used goes up by 1, but you get +2 dex to your stats and you get a chance of getting up to two ores per sieving!
Silver Ores now count to your requirement. 5 times should be ok to clear but will take a while because silver is fairly uncommon.
Find Iron Ore. (100 times) Total: 30.00
Find Copper Ore. (40 times) Total: 32.00
Find Silver Ore. (5 times) Total: 25.00
Find a jewel. (3 times) Total: 27.00
