  You probably should do pretty well for yourself from the way you talk about the game. I'm not all for competitive play, but I have EV trained my team at the least and balanced it out. On the other hand, you go further than that with in-depth strategy and etc.
  
  Competitive battles aren't about experience as far as how long you've been playing the game, rather how much general knowledge you own of the game.

  With now 646 Pokemon out there, a little less than 1/3 of which viable in competitive battles of any sort, playing the game for a long time considerably adds to your knowledge of the game. Knowing what type any given pokemon is off the bat, its general stats, the types of movesets people usually run with with a particular species... some things become second nature with experience.
  
  Like chess and many other games, you can read up on a lot of things but experience is still the best teacher.
