Obviously they help a lot. But Im looking through some of them in the wiki and some of the "Pro" ones look very unappealing. Like raven for instance. Good my min and max goes up but -3 def? I cant live without my defense it helps me a lot. Destruction is another. -40hp, can live without but -20 dex???? Wont that be harder to get that max damage with lower dex? Can someone explain why?
I really am confused.
But seriously Dont flame. I get pissed off when people are like. "Dude this noob dosent know why enchants are so great."

Sometimes a Prefix and a Suffix can add up to be something great.
Honestly, you have to lose something to gain something.

Is max and min damage that great? I mean come on. Some of these enchants you guys use are really crazy in the negative department.

Some people have enough dex and def to deal with the -stats. Some people also don't get hit that often, so def is not always a priority. Then again, some enchants don't have a negative aspect other than increased repair cost while giving great stat gains.
Max is very important. The name of the game is to deal larger amounts of damage.

If you have like 300+ dex and you're melee you rly won't care about dex decreasing eses for melee as long as you keep 80% balance
+4min/+8max > 3 def you're not supposed to get hit in Mabi anyway (except giants with wind guard <3?)
Btw Destruction is 2h weapon only so lets say Archers can't put it on bows and they rly don't get affected by enchants like that and with a lot of dex like mentioned before you won't notice anything from the dex decrease.
And enchants can easily add +50 max dmg

Well, people with money/resources use spike enchant over raven enchants. Most enchants are just pretty bad and useless. Well, people usually use those junk enchants to enchant train. Once in a long while, some enchants might become good as a step-up enchant.
Most games have a bunch of useless/bad items that people just don't want to get to make the good items ... well, seem better.

eses
Took me a while to figure this one out.
And yes I get what your saying about not getting hit and everything. Will I get better about not getting hit later on? I kinda get hit a lot sometimes. r6 wm ftl. (is ranking)
And I do know what enchant goes on what. I knew about destruction and those popular enchants.
Is it bad that enchants like Imp and defensive and Exspensive-Looking appeal to me? I like those because they give def and stats.

Here, I'll keep it real simple.
How to obtain more balance: Gain more dex. This can be done by constantly ranking life skills and archery. If you have enough dex to reach 80% balance, you no longer need any more.
How to obtain more max damage: Once you've squeezed out every last bit of STR, you literally fall back to weapon max damage. Once you've achieved the highest amount of max damage on a weapon possible? You gotta resort to enchants. Every last drop counts.
Of course, max damage shouldn't be your priority until you've managed that 80% balance.
Dex reducing enchants are also sought out not for the other benefits, but for Refining training. Less dex = better for training.
You might be surprised, but there are a LOT of 10 hp builds out there, people purposely forcing their hp below 10 for better survival.
Imp and Expensive-Looking are both fantastic enchants for most of your mid-game experience. Use them.
You'll want something better far in the future, but they are great nevertheless. I personally like tanking, so my human has a ton of defense. Imp helps you out in this department.
My giant on the other hand is purely max damage.

Sooner or later you'll care more about your dmg output than your defense^^ Sure you can make a def set if you want to :p at the end you have to decide which enchants to use yourself anyway

When you have r1 of all the melee skills, all the range skills and al lthe good +dex life skills, you just don't care about anything else but +dmg.

So after like 80% balance dex means almost nothing and +Max is where its at?
Thanks guys. Especially Kita. Also thanks for holding in your "Gawd theres always one of these nub" comments :) I know you were thinking them :P

I would rather have more max damage than 80% balance >_<
Depending on the amounts though.

This concept is actually a little more advanced when learning Mabinogi, so theres no reason everyone is expected to know them.
Dex isn't particularly pointless after you reach 80% balance, since Dex can still contribute greatly to archery damage. Archers love to bump up their dex as much as possible, so they focus on Dex and Max attack enchants rather than just Max attack.
The choice between choosing a stat for damage and just max damage for damage can come from comparing the conversion.
2.5 STR = 1 Max Damage melee attacks
2.5 DEX = 1 Max Damage ranged attacks
If you had Rough enchant. You gain 22 max damage. Thats 55 STR you pull out of nowhere. No enchant gives you 55 STR. Thats pretty crazy. You lose 20 dex, but if you already have 80% balance, and you were a melee specialist, it wouldn't matter to you.

The -20 dex on a two-hander sword won't matter to range even if you were an archer. You can't use range while holding two-hander sword, and when you are doing range, that enchant is gone.

There you go.
Its an epic good enchant.
Seriously, maxing out rank 1 combat mastery doesn't even give you 55 strength.
And due to some strange magic behind the damage calculations, you'll be doing a lot more than 22 extra damage.
